Aromas of coffee, roasted and toasted malts, and even a little burnt malt. Flavor is lots of coffee, roasted malts, some burnt malts there as well. Some molassess, and even a little cocoa. Full bodied and seemingly chewy at times, with a nice dry bitter finish. beastiefan2k (1601), Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 25, 2006 On tap @ the Publick house. Enjoyed this with JoeMcPhee. Poured completely black with a small brown head. Aroma is present - roasty coffee. Roasty bitter taste, originally served too cold, had to wait for it to warm. Its aright but this whole stout completely dominated by coffee is starting to get old. Ernest (4487), Boulder, Colorado, USA

Head is mostly lasting.
Body is dark brown to black.
Aroma is moderately malty (roasted/burnt grain, chocolate), with a note of tar.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation.
The sourness and relatively simple nose kept me from enjoying this one more. luckygirl (1221), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 24, 2006 Draught at the brewery. Beer was a nearly opaque dark brown with a large, light brown, frothy, mostly lasting head. I liked the aroma a lot. Malty with moderate notes of roasted grain, molasses, chocolate, caramel and coffee; hoppy with a light note of herb; yeasty with a light note of dough and damp basement; moderate notes of brine/smoke/smokey meat; light gingerbread. The flavor was moderately to heavily bitter, moderately sweet and lightly acidic with a long, lightly bitter finish. The body was medium, the texture was velvety and the carbonation was soft. apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 23, 2006 I was really impressed with this: on tap at the brewpub...Very thick and rich, great mouthfeel, slightly chewy, yet it is not too heavy. Full-aroma and Full-flavor. Great amounts of coffee and chocolate. Gentle roasted malts abound, but this one is not too sweet. Very good, wish I had more of it. notalush (2660), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 20, 2006 Tap at the brewpub - shazam - a great foreign stout - perfectly black with a thick dark brown lace - nice cocoa, anise, wine-like bitterness - light toffee sweetness to balance - not so much roasty as it is burnt in flavor, but not in a bad way, more like a well-done roasted marshmallow with bittersweet chocolate wrapped around it. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 14, 2006 Tap at the brewpub. Pours a very deep black with barely any light escaping and a ncie creamy tan head. Aroma is dry acidic roasted malts, some chocolate, toffee, and a lgith sweetness. Bitter roasted malt flavor, some chocolate, light crystal malt character, and a nice somewhat dry acrid roasted bitter finish. Nice and smooth overall. A great overall stout. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 3, 2006 Draught pint at the brewpub on 4/28/06 Light tan head is small, with moderate retention and little to no lacing. Body is near opaque black, though deep tan when held to light on the edges. Requires waiting until it has warmed, but after doing so, strong roasted barley and sweet cream fight each other (balancing well), while chewy dates and sticky toffee add substance and light sweetness, though that is quickly brushed off by black coffee/espresso on the end. Rather straightforward, light vanilla and dry molasses residue play about, while some chocolate sweetness continues to keep things balanced. Aroma is medium in strength. Roasty, straight-up American stout-like flavors show the typical roasted barley, dry chocolate and espresso. Butter toffee really asserts itself with continued warming (not diacetyl, but just a fairly rich toffee flavor). Hops are leafy, minimally juicy, dry and very green. Dry, gritty at times texture, with moderate carbonation and no alcohol apparency.
