Dark color, big head. Good and powerful Stout, essentially roasted malt, but also enough caramel, good body, smooth enough. Powerful final, where some hop reveals itself behind the roasted malt.

Very fizzy-looking, coke coloured and feeding a cola-like head, active and unlasting. Quite roasty nose, though not taking any chocolate or coffee costumes: straight up burnt toast. As a result, it does not feel very complex. It certainly has little to do with foreign stouts. It is very dry on the palate. As a result, it is quite drinkable. SImple, but clean, fresh and well done. Perhaps a tiny touch of cocoa can be felt, but really, this is straight up dry roastiness and subtle hoppiness. I was quite surprised at the body’s leanness.

My Bottom Line:
Roasted malts throughout evolve into toastiness and bitterness, as scant fieldberries roam on by. This is a decent pint, but definitely not as memorable as many other Southampton creations.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-There is barely a ring of foam to decorate the near blackness.
-The body is lean, but perhaps too much so for my tastes. Carbonation is quite lively as well, so the mouthfeel is not as soothing as most stouts can be.
-Green hoppiness supports the moderate roasty bitterness in the back.
-This lacked dark chocolate sweetness and thus a little residual sugar, at least to my tastes.

On tap at Holy Smoke BBQ, Mahopac, NY.

Tap at the brewpub. Pitch black with a thick brown sticky head. Great strong roasty nose over toasted malt notes and a hint of fruit underneath it all. Flavour is well-balanced and surprisingly refreshing. Strong roasted grain with a long charry finish. The roast and acidity really dry it out. Not a complicated beer, but a good one.

Draught, Publick House, Southampton. Head is mostly lasting. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted/burnt grain, chocolate), with a note of tar. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation. The sourness and relatively simple nose kept me from enjoying this one more.

Draught pint at the brewpub on 4/28/06
Light tan head is small, with moderate retention and little to no lacing. Body is near opaque black, though deep tan when held to light on the edges.
Requires waiting until it has warmed, but after doing so, strong roasted barley and sweet cream fight each other (balancing well), while chewy dates and sticky toffee add substance and light sweetness, though that is quickly brushed off by black coffee/espresso on the end. Rather straightforward, light vanilla and dry molasses residue play about, while some chocolate sweetness continues to keep things balanced. Aroma is medium in strength.
Roasty, straight-up American stout-like flavors show the typical roasted barley, dry chocolate and espresso. Butter toffee really asserts itself with continued warming (not diacetyl, but just a fairly rich toffee flavor). Hops are leafy, minimally juicy, dry and very green. Dry, gritty at times texture, with moderate carbonation and no alcohol apparency.

Tap at the brewpub. Pours a very deep black with barely any light escaping and a ncie creamy tan head. Aroma is dry acidic roasted malts, some chocolate, toffee, and a lgith sweetness. Bitter roasted malt flavor, some chocolate, light crystal malt character, and a nice somewhat dry acrid roasted bitter finish. Nice and smooth overall. A great overall stout.

Draught at Hop Devil, NYC. Pitch black, brown head. Smoked malt aroma, chocolate, milk, cocoa, smoked fish, ash and some fruity notes. Smoked flavor, ash, rather malty, cocoa, nice balance and a rather pleasant finish.
