This beer truly has a great nose- roasty and smooth with hints of chocolate. Flavor is very similar with a smooth palate feel. It’s gets better as I enjoy the beer and it warms. This is probably my favorite porter to date. acertain (249), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 9, 2006 Thanks, jah noth! Opaque brown/black with almost white head. Aroma subtle, but increasing as it warmed. Could small coffee, chocolate and other roated malty aromas. Nice flavor, some additional sweet, flowery aromas emerged once it was in the mouth. Almost no bitterness. A little too sweet for me. Drew (2410), Kent, Ohio, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 4, 2006 Deep brown/black, off-white head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Taste was smooth, rich but not overly thick, full of cocoa powder and coffee. Very nice, not as intense as I had hoped, but pleasant. jmuhops (663), Winchester, Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 2, 2006 Pours black with a one-finger off-white head. Aroma of molasses, dark chocolate, caramel, and toffee. The flavor is much like the aroma, with a strong and lasting toffee and chocolate aftertaste. Could be more "Imperial," but still very good. joss (3685), Garching b. München, Germany

Medium body. Ok, but not fantastic. matta (1139), Tampa, Florida, USA

I picked this beer up in Manhattan back in the summer of 2004. This was back when Southampton was brewing this beer on site and foil capped the bottles neck. I thought that it would be a great addition to my cellar…. Ummm… not so great after all!
Poured a fine-looking black body, edges of chestnut, and a foamy tan cap of head. The aroma shows some chocolate and black patent malts, hints of toffee. The flavor is rather bland… I was very disappointed. The beer was showing small signs of oxidation, old cardboard, old books, a high school gym locker. There are some hints of brown sugar and raisin in the middle and a slight earthy peat like bitterness in the finish. The palate was respectable… I was just expecting far more from such an esteemed brewery! ukoolaid (572), Amherst, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 26, 2005 Bottle. Pours a completely opaque brown with decent brown head. Aroma is roasted malts and licorice. Taste is full with caramel, chocolate, and a little salt. Mouthfeel is very creamy and warming. This is an excellent porter. haddon90 (1036), Alexandria, Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 25, 2005 Bought this 22oz bottle at Norm’s in Vienna, VA. Pours a deep black color with a thin, tan head. Caramel aroma, with some roasted malt notes. A nice milk chocolate taste comes first, and then smooths out. Some smokey, and a hint of some dark fruits like davecooks said. Pretty decent, something I’d expect from Southampton.
