I think it appeared to me in a dream the night before the blind. Real roasty, delicious. Smooth malts and nutty. Some slight bitterness from hops but nice balance from the sweet body. golubj (1287), Sunnyvale, California, USA

Sure glad I was present to get a few tasty ounces of this. It poured just pitch black with mocha head. The aroma starts pretty light while cold with roastiness, mild burnt malts, chocolate and a hint of toffee. The flavor is highly roasted malts that slowly build toward a chocolate to charred burnt malts. Toward the finish the burnt malts become more dominant. Its smooth with rich maltiness. The after taste lingers for ever with burnt and roasty malts with slivers of dark chocolate. Wow, smooth rich and delicious. JMFG (1514), Florida, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 19, 2007 Sample courtesy boboski. 2005 bottle. Jet black pour with a broken dark khaki head. The aroma sets the bar for an imperial stout - a complex mix of heavy roast, coffee, nuttiness, alcohol, cocoa. It all melds into a scent that is rich but not overpowering. Taste is mainly the roast and chocolate flavors, smooth, refined and touched a bit by alcohol and dryness in the finish. Perfectly balanced and a treat to have had. (Thanks Jason!) Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, dried dark fruits, whole coffee beans, licorice, dry wood. Same flavors, more intense with roasty dark chocolate dominating. Full body, creamy with soft carbonation. Big, rich, roasty, imperial stout. Excellent. thedm (3836), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 4, 2007 This bottled brew from a rating party on Dark Lord Day poured a head of foamy finely sized brown colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a opaque no visible carbonation black colored body and a good lacing. The nice aroma was dark malt. The mouth feel was tingly at the start with a mellow finish. The flavor contained notes of dark malt chocolate and licorice. decaturstevo (1997), decatur, Tennessee, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jul 9, 2007 A bottle from DL day. A very dark brown pour that has a dark brown lite foam ring and lace. A huge aroma of chocolate with a hint of abv coming through. A rich chocolate flavor with a good solid bitter finish. Full bodied beer with excellent mouthfeel. A really good solid overall around beer almost flawless. These are the notes I took while sampling this beer on a very drunk day. I had no idea the beer was retired had no idea how good it was suppose to be. When you drink a beer like this and it turns out to be just as good as you thought it was just makes you feel lucky to have tried it. thanks to the gracious soul that brought this to DL day. cheerstevo Ughsmash (4022), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Jun 18, 2007 2005 bottle, extra thanks to Crosling! I wasn’t ready to open it... but I noticed that it was somehow oozing from the bottom, and the bottle was stuck to my shelf... I thank all the higher powers that it turned out perfectly!
Perhaps the finest looking pour I have ever seen.. oily pitch black with a creamy, dark cappuccino head (don’t recall a darker head on a beer). The aroma resonated well-roasted dark chocolate and espresso beans.. brilliant use of anise and residual burnt black sugars.. room temperature brings out some good ol’ blackstrap molasses.. I just absolutely got lost in it.
The flavor began with a heavy dose of espresso bitterness with deep espresso and dark chocolate roast washing over the middle.. anise and molassess cascade elegantly over the sides of the tongue.. the finish was warm and long, carrying through espresso bitterness and roasted dark chocolates. Heavier-bodied.. great transitions from the bitter fore to the creamy middle to the warm finish.. the back-end and finish have some sharper alcohol notes. All in all a truly magnificent brew! Thanks Nick!
