1000th rating, 2008 Bottle thanks to Dmac. Pours out black with a two-finger tan head. Complex aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, earthy tobacco and some dried fruits. Taste is very complex with a nice smooth mouthfeel. Flavors of roasted malts, dark chocolate, slight coffee, fig, cherry, earthy notes little bit of bitterness and alochol in the finish. Overall a very good RIS

750ml bottle from NYbeer, huge thanks Steven. Dark black pour with a thin tan head. Very floral, grainy, very nice. Slightly bitter, coffee, bitter dark chocolate, this is pretty damn tasty.

Huge thanks to Joerodiii over on Beeradvocate for this one. WOW! The aroma and flavors, while there was a lot of roastiness and coffee notes, more than anything to me resembled a delicious dark chocolate. I’m almost sad that I’ve had this now, knowing that I’ll likely have to wait a long time to try another!

Was not to impressed with this beer. The body was thin, the flavors were muted,. Expected a great deal more from this beer. Its an average stout at best.

Bottle 102, 2009. Moderate to heavy malt aromas of toasted, molasses and dark chocolate, resin and earth for the hops and yeast, with background notes of alcohol, tar and anise. Head is average sized, creamy, brown (which settles to light brown), has good lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is black. Flavor starts moderately to heavily sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes moderately bittersweet. Palate is full, creamy, has a soft carbonation and finishes dry. The flavor and palate of this Imperial Stout is perfect, as is the finish in both.

Review #800. 2009 bottle, 750mL numbered 230, poured into a tulip. Pours pitch black with a massive mocha head, at least three inches worth, that hangs on for ages and forms a nice cap that leaves good lacing after each sip. The aroma is textbook RIS with massive dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, licorice and a bit of citrus hops just to round things out. Some dark fruits come out when it warms, especially raisins and figs. There’s a massive chocolate malt explosion on the palate with the first taste. Just tons of dark malts with a roasted character that lingers through the finish with the alcohol burning ever so slightly between sips. There is a vanilla sweetness that builds as it warms and balances the massive roasted malt backbone. The mouthfeel is on the fuller side of things with pretty strong carbonation. This is one of the better stouts I’ve had in recent memory and a fantastic example of an RIS. Despite being a textbook example, it seems to bring bigger versions of the flavors to the table at every turn. Big thanks to the generous trader who got me this bottle.

Bottle, 2009. Aroma of chocolate pretzels (didn’t come up with that, but so true), lightly roasted coffee, cherries. Flavor has lovely, decadent molasses and chocolate truffle, chocolate cake, peanut butter, strong roast, some supporting alcohol, some plums and cherries work their way in. Pretty rich mouthfeel, but not quite enough to make it a 5. Still quite fantastic.
