Commercial Description:
IPAs are more highly hopped and a bit stronger than traditional pale ales. There are two distinct styles - English and American. English IPAs tend to be more subtle and a bit maltier while American IPAs have a bolder hop character.
Southampton brewmaster Phil Markowski has combined the best of both styles in his IPA. He’s crafted an ale with the bold citrusy hop character of an American IPA and the maltier, more refined flavor of an English IPA. Although the defining characteristic of Southampton IPA is balance, its incredible blend of three American and two British hop varieties is sure to please any hophead!

Off-white head that leaves lacing. Orange amber color. Citrusy, piny hops in the aroma. Moderate hops that stick from front to finish. Little citrusy. Medium thickness, but it lets you know that it is there.

THOUGHTS: Just a generic IPA. I’ve had better and worse. It didn’t really stand out in either direction. Not enough balance for me. The hops overpowered the malt way too much. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, light to medium orange with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma was a little weak for an IPA. There was light caramel malt, pine and citrus hops (grapefruit and even more orange). The initial flavor was lightly sweet acidic and bitter; while the finish was light to moderately sweet, lightly acidic and moderate to heavily bitter with a long duration. There was a little caramel malt, orangy hops and a little grapefruit citrus hops then a little more pine with the orange and caramel. It was a little like marmalade for a second, but then it was all overpowered by bitter hops. The light to medium body was slightly syrupy then fairly dry with tingly carbonation and a metallic and moderate astringent finish.

On tap at SPH. Pours an amber/orange with a white head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma of citrus and grapefruit, with a slight hint of pine. Flavor mostly citrus with a nice malt balance. Not as powerful/flavorful as other IPAs but still quite tasty. A nice refreshing beer and worth a try.

On tap at the Publick House. Aroma primarily in the pine/resin area, some citrus, some grainy caramel malt. Flavor brings no surprises, hop character remains mild for an IPA without a particularly interesting malt to replace it. No problems, enjoyable, but unexciting for an IPA.

Poured a hazy golden amber with a creamy head. The aroma was of a grassy malt with hints of citrus. Crisp clean initial taste with a nice roll into a hop bite with some bitterness on the finish. There was a good bit of carbonation and a subtle sweetness to cut the bitterness.

Columbia, SC - Total Wine - 12 oz bottle. Dark orange pour, sticky off-white head - good lacing. Faint spruce in the aroma, hints of nectarines. Stand west-coast hoppiness with a good malty nutty balance to it. Thick, creamy mouthfeel. Very decent - just running out of adjective to describe these IPAs.
