Commercial Description:
IPAs are more highly hopped and a bit stronger than traditional pale ales. There are two distinct styles - English and American. English IPAs tend to be more subtle and a bit maltier while American IPAs have a bolder hop character.
Southampton brewmaster Phil Markowski has combined the best of both styles in his IPA. He’s crafted an ale with the bold citrusy hop character of an American IPA and the maltier, more refined flavor of an English IPA. Although the defining characteristic of Southampton IPA is balance, its incredible blend of three American and two British hop varieties is sure to please any hophead!

Sweet toffee aroma. Cloudy in color, it looks almost like iced tea. Very clean tasting. Smooth matl with slight hoppy aftertaste. Overall, it wasn’t as hopped as I would like but it did make for an easy drinking brew.

Pours a clear copper/dark honey colour. Slightly hoppy aroma with a hint of malt. Interesting aroma for an IPA. Taste is well balanced with a hint of citrus and bitter finish. Alright tasting, but I prefer a bit more hops in my pale ales.

Bottle: This poured a dark amber with a small cream head. Nose was earthy hops, toasted malts, some light citrus and a bit of pine. I also seemed to pick up on a bit of cardboard-y oxidation. Medium-light body...flavor was just out-n-out boring. Nothing grabbed hold and defined itself in any way, slightly bitter, some roasted malts and that’s about it. I respect that they’re trying to make a balanced IPA but this one just didn’t do it for me. The possibility of it being an old bottle is noted.

Bottle. Poured a straw color with a thin head. Gorgeous spicy hop and orange aroma. Flavor is somewhat wheake, tea like, with a bit of orange and toffee and a sharp finish.

Bronze color and pours with a thick khacki head. Aroma, not much there, a little malty with hop and caramel undertones. Flavors are more malty than I’d like from an IPA but that was expected. Roasty caramel, toffee, dough, complimenting bitter hops. Really, this is a pretty good beer, just not what I generally look for in an IPA.

From reading the label, I was pretty sure this was not going to be my favorite IPA and it isn’t. Give me the over the top West Coast IPAs any day. What’s here: Beer pours clear honey golden color with a lightly retained off white head. Aroma is lightly citrically hoppy with some caramel malt undertones. Flavor is likewise being initially bitter with some cereal malty biscuit type flavor in the finish. I just need a lot more IBUs in my IPAs!
