Commercial Description:
IPAs are more highly hopped and a bit stronger than traditional pale ales. There are two distinct styles - English and American. English IPAs tend to be more subtle and a bit maltier while American IPAs have a bolder hop character.
Southampton brewmaster Phil Markowski has combined the best of both styles in his IPA. He’s crafted an ale with the bold citrusy hop character of an American IPA and the maltier, more refined flavor of an English IPA. Although the defining characteristic of Southampton IPA is balance, its incredible blend of three American and two British hop varieties is sure to please any hophead!

Bottle (650ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc, tupalev, DougShoemaker, R and others - my bottle. Poured clear copper-amber with a smallish off-white head. Dry aroma of light hops, toasty malt - simple, pleasant. Taste is a straightforward balance of light malt and light pine/resin hops, the finish is long, definitely bitter, but restrained - the body is a touch light, astringent and adequately carbonated - nice IPA, not a sipper, you want to *drink* this one ... could use a bit more body though.

Draft, Baja Bean, Staunton VA. Bright gold with white head. Subdued hoppy nose of mostly earthy/piney hops with a hint of citrus in the background. Crisp palate with superb bitterness and sticky pine hops flavor, but I was left wanting for citrus and floral hop flavors. Tasty overall, though. Not far removed from Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

Poured from a 12oz bottle a golden yellow with an off-white head. Aroma was hoppy, lots of pine and citrus hops. Flavor had some caramel malt with a good grapefruit flavor. The flavor seamed to fade as it went down. The hops seamed to mellow out as the beer warmed.

12 oz bottle. Pours pale amber with white head. Faint malty and grapefruit aroma. Thin malty backbone overpowered by a hoppy grapfruit flavors. There is a hint of lemon zest right before the hoppy, slightly watery finish. This beer is not terrible, just disappointing considering the source. I am rather picky about IPA’s, just look at my statistics.

22oz bottle via trade with DocLock - Thanks Jeff! - Pours amber with a short white creamy head that stays pretty well and laces some. Aromas of grapefruit and pine. Flavor is a balance between sweet caramle malts and bitter pine and grapefruit flavors. The palate is smooth medium bodied and quite drinkable. Pretty average IPA but really nothing outstanding about this one.

On Tap at hollingshead’s. Abit of subdued for the style, but still great, a little sweetness, but very nice drinking, overall a good brew!

Draught at Public House 4/28/06. Pours a bright copper color with a big foamy white head. Nose is hoppy and fresh, lots of pine. Palate is playful and fizzy, tickles a bit with a nice bitter finish. Flavor is big and hoppy with a nice malt backround in the back bringing in some sweet tones and providing some balance.

This is only my second beer from Southampton. The IPA poured to an inviting copper color with a modest head. The alochol and hops were at a good balance. The texture was smooth with some lingering bitter aftertaste. There just wasn’t something to make this IPA standout.
