Commercial Description:
IPAs are more highly hopped and a bit stronger than traditional pale ales. There are two distinct styles - English and American. English IPAs tend to be more subtle and a bit maltier while American IPAs have a bolder hop character.
Southampton brewmaster Phil Markowski has combined the best of both styles in his IPA. He’s crafted an ale with the bold citrusy hop character of an American IPA and the maltier, more refined flavor of an English IPA. Although the defining characteristic of Southampton IPA is balance, its incredible blend of three American and two British hop varieties is sure to please any hophead!

Bottled. Poured crystal-clear fiery orange with a short cap of whitish head. The aroma picked up a most definite blend of English and west-coast hoppage upfront with grapefruit, catty notes, and aromatic floral notes present (kind of like hibiscus).. quite sweet malty backing with caramel taking charge.. most definitely intriguing. The flavor was along those same lines.. tangy citrus and catty notes on the front rolling onto caramel and some other pale malts at the core.. rising floral bitterness toward the back and through the finish.. maintained its balance alright, but it was a tad too sweet. Light-medium bodied with moderate overall bitterness on the palate.. tasty and interesting, but not great.

Bottle pours copper color with a light head. A slightly sour and earthy aroma. A bit of cider like notes. Quick hops bite fades into a sweet body. Thin but sweet. Very easy drinking and not half bad. Variety of things going on.

12 oz. Clear bronze with a huge head that finally settles down to a half inch. Aroma of lemon, resin, wheat and slight gunmetal. Flavors of citronella, resin, bready yeast and wheat. Light-medium body is smooth, soft and dry on the finish. Quality brew, but my tastebuds didn’t like the lemon flavors and aromas.

The aroma was earthy hops, slight burnt smell. Not bad, but not great. the appearance was dark for an IPA, red/brown, decent white head. The flavor was crisp, earthy hops, with some citrus in the background, residual amount of burnt caramel. The finish was spicy and bitter, mainly earthy hops, slightly metallic. Decent medium/thick mouthfeel. Not bad at all, but not the best.

Different label. Picked up at Macs on West Peachtree. 12 oz. Nice head that fades away quickly. Leaving a THIN head sitting on top. Darker than normal. Dark copper brown color. Decent looking, but nothing superior. Weak hop aroma. It isn’t that pungent, but pungent enough to smell the beer. Not a very nuanced aroma. Slight burnt caramel sweet malt aroma. Bitter hop taste that fades away fairly quickly. Slightly sweet towards the end, but mainly a light bittering hop throughout. Overall, decent IPA, but nothing special.

Bottle. Clear golden pour with a nice white head. Nice hop aroma with some sweet malt to it as well. Flavor is one long bitter hop spike, not bad. Pretty good overall beer.

Clear amber pour with lively carbonation and a large-bubbled white head. Aroma is floral and fruity with excellent fruity ester content, as well as sweet caramel and toffee. Orange peel rounds out the nose. Flavor is a delicate balance of citrus and floral hops with a sweet malt backbone. Malt character is great for the style, imparting caramel and toffee. Palate is very full for the style, finishing semi dry and rather crisp. A great representation of the style.

On tap at Rattle N Hum (NYC): A decent golden orange appearance couples with notes of citrus and a slight bitter aftertaste. Smooth taste. #001 on 14062009, DG.
