DaSilky1 (1622), San Diego, California, USA Nov 9, 2003 light golden yellow, solid white sheet of sudz..very very very very doughy aroma with notes of grass and lemon...flavors of sugar cookie dough that is just plain mesmorizing...spicy, yeasty, peppery flavors that let out shouts of mango and white grapes..Best trippel on the planet as of yet. iwantalambic (1361), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Jun 28, 2005 750 mL bottle (corked and caged, a bit less than 2 years old): clear straw with streaming bubbles feeding a thin (though initially growing), but persistent creamy film. Cloves and mushy bananas dominate the aroma, while straw and soft, dough yeast provide nice supporting roles. Lightly sour notes add unique vinous notes and interesting perfume effervescence while a long dryness smoothes and distributes the lingering hoppiness over the tongue. Lemon zest tingles the tongue while the doughy yeast sticks to the sides of the mouth. Worth the wait and one that the monks would surely love. Wonderfully clear, effervescent pale gold with a thin white head that retains beautifully and leaves lots of sticky lace. Incredible nose of white grapes, banana, cloves, vanilla, cotton candy, musty yeast, black pepper, and faint alcohol. Impressive balance in the aroma between the sweet fruit and spiciness, with a sturdy yeast backbone holding it all up. The flavor expands upon that balance with a huge burst of fruit, with some tropical fruit hints thrown in for good measure, balanced by an assertive black pepper and clove phenolic spiciness. All of this is underpinned by a strong, musty yeast foundation and slightly herbal Styrian hop bitterness. Finishes with a hop flavor flourish and candi sugar sweetness, along with a smooth, cleansing shot of alcohol. On the palate, it begins sharp and crisp, then turns soft and fluffy on the finish. The yeast dregs in the last quarter of the bottle only serve to enhance it’s creaminess. A superb, domestic take on a Belgian-style tripel, this is my first (and incredibly anticipated) beer from Southampton Publick House. While a bit lighter in body than the indigenous ones, it has no problem hanging with the classic, more well known examples of the style. A huge, sincere THANK YOU to goldtwins for the bottle.
scraff (1667), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Sep 8, 2003 Brussels comes to Long Island? This just became one of my favorite Tripels. Golden color, smooth and creamy with lace work that stays alive throughout. Cloves, banana, a bit of apricot, and a smidge of black pepper (aroma and taste). Medium to full bodied. Quite dry, but refresing at the same time. Make sense? This was not easy to get, but absolutely worth the effort. SHPH has got it going on in a big way! Keep up the great work. Thanks Phil.
