Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Nice hazy brown color. Smells of big time molasses with some undertones of toffee, caramel, raisins, and just a little bit of bubble gum. Taste is seriously full of hops, caramel, and toffee. Has a nice aftertaste that is full bodied and full of flavor. Wow what a good job!

Semi filtered. Not much head. Odd upfront aroma, mild and not too strong, good amount of hops.

Bottle, 23-APR-2009 Brown with some red/orange, and almost no head. Malted scents. Lots of charamelt and hops flavours. They may call it English inspired, but it is definately American, and very good! Not so heavy, a little sweet, and very easy drinkable. Perfect drink in the hotel room in New York!!!

Fresh 09 bottle with the new labels. Pours a slightly unclear brown with a slight red hue and small frothy head. Really nice and typical American BW caramelly pine aroma. Flavor is similar, typical American BW, nice balanced but strong caramel and fresh piney hops, slightly toasty. Medium body, a bit sticky with a lighter mouthful. Easy drinking for a 10% brew. Really nice.

Big sweetness jumped up my nostrils when i buried my face into the glass. Big molasses sweetness with lots of ripe summer fruits, some silky chocolate notes, candy hints and roasted maltiness. Nice drink.

Bottled. Slight hazy redbrown color, short head. Aroma of caramel malt, fruit, barley, heavy hop, bit sugar. Sweet taste, malty, quite bitter. Bit sweet barley wine.

Rum raisin and toasty aroma, makes me wonder why I never make french toast with raisin bread. anyway. Deep ruby red, marshmallow head. More marshmallow, though this time in the sip, golden and roasted. Some wood and honey in the finish, creamy texture.

Thanks 17thfloor for sharing this while brewing on the burner! Pours deep ruby brown with a small lingering off white head. Aroma works off of a big hop presence. Ripe dark fruits give a nice sweetness to back it up along with a small alcoholic note. Some nice pine and woody character balances it well. Flavor starts with a rich full fruitiness that quickly picks up a hop bite on the tongue. Some caramel sugars and candy licorice help balance the bitter lingering finish and aftertaste. Medium to full body and a nice warming finish.
