Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

22 oz. bottle - thanks to tweety for this bonus a while back; pours a clear, dense amber with spotty white head, but mostly flat; killer nose of sweet fruit and sugar, body is quite thing, but there is tons of flavor; slight syrupy too; apples, sugar, and sherry; would love more body to it, but otherwise this is a yummy BW

Pours a dark murky resinous amber having a tacky/ frothy off white head. Juicy pine and citrus aromas that is somewhat powerful. The taste is very nice. Has that upfront citrus/ pine hop flavor that was expected from the aromas. There is also a faint malt backbone. The aroma and flavors go hand in hand. Good lacing thats a notch above average with a semi sweet and bitterness all around. Alcohol is almost perfectly hidden. So its hard to believe its abv is 10%. For a price tag of 6.99 I think it was truly worth it. Nicely done all around!

Bottle. High creamy off-white head leaving long lasting curtains. Dark hazy orange amber body. Hops oranges nut aroma. Mild hops apple pear flavor without the feared high alcohol taste, Low carbonation, I do not quite get it. High alcohol percentage. No special aroma or flavor.

22oz bottle. Pours a slightly hazy deep ruby red-brown body with a thin, off-white head that leaves a decent amount of runny lacing. Aroma is malty sweet with lots of berries, light notes of booze and grassy hops. Oranges and apricots. The nose grows nicely as it warms. Flavor is pretty solid. Initial chewy caramel malts give way to a good amount of medium grassy hops that lasts through the finish and linger for a long time. Berries and citrus come in during the middle and lead into the finish as well. Finishes dry with a sweet and sprucey earth aftertaste. Palate is medium to full bodied and has a light warmth on the way down. Overall, a very nice tasting barley wine. Not too sweet and not too hoppy/boozy. Really fine balance.

Bottle kindly shared by Anker. Hazy amber body with a dense off white head. Lovely aroma of spicy hops, sweet malt and lots of fruit. Fantastic flavour of sweet malt, caramel, hops and exotic spices as well as peach and melon. Soft and creamy body. Not very barley like but oh so tasty.
