Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Pours a reddish color without hardly any head, what is there is small and off white. Nose: banana, hoppy citrus, booze. Taste is malty, citrus, brown sugar, with a thick mouthfeel.

Bottle Pours out a nice amber topped with a sand head. Aroma of sweetness O yes caramel along with some fruit. Tast more of the sweetness all over this one. Alittle hops just to round it out. Vert tasty. I keep saying this but can Southern Tier make a bad Beer??? I have not had one yet.

Dark ambe pour with a small tan head. Big hops, malt, fruit, and boozy aroma. Flavor is similar and big on the hops. Very good, but with the high ABV best to stick with just a few.

Bottle from jjpm74. Pours a dark amber with nice big off-white head. Carmalized sugar with some bread on the nose. Flavor is caramel with hints of spice and some nice hop chunks to it. Nice thick body with good dried fruit tones that finish this gem off.

Bottle: Nice amber pour with a thin beige head. Strong aroma with a hoppy and citrus presence. Sweet caramel malt and light florals. Tastes sweet and soft, fruity. Faded citrus hops and weet maltiness. Bready and perhaps a touch of sherry? Lovely. Thanks Jeremy!

Bottle: Thanks BuckeyeBoy! Pours a dark mahogany color with a nice head and lacing. Nose of sweet fruit, some chewy caramel and a huge berry waffle note. Good chewy dough and savory biscotti or scone. Lovely large mouthfeel. Mellow impact. Not much in the alcohol department, smooth with light sherry.
