Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bottle at 5 O’Clocks in Stevensville, MI. Hurrah, they finally offer a few decent beers here. This ambiguously colored beer (reddish brown / copper / mahogany / red) seems to change with the lighting. It poured with a decent beige/tan head and a toffee and plum aroma. The flavor is rich and sweet, and features dark fruit, roasted malt, a few spices and a light alcohol trail. I certaintly enjoyed it.

Bottle. Pours a rich amber, almost mahogeny, with a thick beige head. Aroma is pungent and floral. Hints of roasted malts, chocolate, ginger, and clove. Medium, smooth body with a long, easy finish. Hides the alcohol very well. Great barley wine from Southern Tier.

Sample from July Beer Club Meeting. A beautiful burnt amber color. Aroma is malty (almost of molasses). Flavor is a little sweet and roasted. Mouthfeel smooth and warm. A smooth barley wine.

Pours a clear copper with off white head. Aroma of caramel malts, booze, dark fruit, candy sugar. Similar taste. Booze is well masked.

Bomber shared at the Butters’ 1500 tasting. Clear ruby red pour with great light tan head for a BW. Nose of raisins, cake, plums, and boatloads of sweet maltiness. Flavor loses the cakiness, but retains all the other sweet dark fruit. No trace of such a high abv. Great sipping barleywine.

Pours dark clear copper in color. Nose is of honey and maple syrup. Notes of sweet malt and alcohol as well. Alcohol comes out quickly as a flavor. Not a great sign. Still its refreshing and not a hot alcohol. Pretty tasty but not my favorite barley wine.
