Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Draft at Ginger Man. Pours a dark brown with a off white head. Aroma of sweet malt, fruit, and a little hops. Nice caramel and heavy malt sweetness. Hides the alcohol very well. Solid Barley.

Pours a a nice brown color with an off white head. Aroma is of dark frui9ts, malts, and hops. Flavor is very sweet and malty with a small amount of hop finish to balance things out. Hides alcohol very well.

Draft at Ginger Man. Pours a mahogany brown body with a lighter head. Aroma is sweet malty with lots of hops and booziness. Some caramel and chocolate sweetness but the hop character with the poorly hidden etoh i am not a fan.

Bottle into snifter. Deep ruby amber with a thin off white head. Rich cereal malt aroma with hoppy resin notes, a bit of alcohol is detectable in the nose. Taste is very sweet malt with a lot of bitterness for balance. Also, there is caramel, chocolate, and dark fruits. Mouthfeel is chewy and creamy, and finishes bitter with some detectable alcohol. Overall, pretty good, drinkable barley wine that is accessible to those who haven’t really developed the palate for this style, and yet interesting enough to be pleasing to the beernerd.

Bottle. Rich malt aroma with resin. Dark amber color with a white smear for head. Medium plus body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is sugar, roasted malt, and some hop bitter - not able to detect type though. Finish is sweet, but not overly so. There’s enough bitter to say almost balanced. Very smooth, very tasty.

deep mahogany copper color, some decent head, nose is hoppy, some resin and pine, also alcohol and like molassis caremel, flavor is roasty, resin, kinda chewy molassis again on the finish. Intresting barely wine showed its alcohol at the finish.

Reddish amber color out of the bottle with a whispy off white head. Dark sugar, juicy dark fruit and alcohol in the nose. Flavors of pit fruit, candi sugar, caramel, toffee, and orange zest in the finish. I really felt the ABV more than tasted it.

This bottled brew from JSquire at a rating party poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized tan mostly diminishing colored bubbles that left behind a softly carbonated transparent red brown colored body and a poor lacing. The aroma was softly floral with hop and malt notes. The mouth feel was tingly from start to finish. The flavor contained notes of barley-wine like hops and malts. Hehe not a great description of a Barley wine "Uh its like a barely wine!" DOH must have had a few to drink by then Lil.
