Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bottle shared with Ian. Pours a reddish brown with a thick tan head. Big beautiful aroma of citrusy hops and malty caramel. Taste is thick and hoppy, very big malt profile, but not over the top. I don’t know how aged the bottle was, but there was a subtlety of the hops and malt that was very nice.

Bottle shared by mmtmatrix. Poured a deep ruby-brown color with a moderate off-white head that faded to a layer and left some lacing. Aroma of sweet maltiness with some caramel and light hops, including citrus. Sweet malts with some decent plum/grape flavor and moderate caramel lead into a moderate hop bitterness with some oxidization. Smooth, moderate bitterness. A pretty solid barley wine.

Bottle from Goldtwins. Thanks man! Pours a great bright auburn with a lasting beige head. Aromas of sweet caramel, toffee, dates, plums, brown sugar, and floral hops. Complex layers of sweetness consisting of ripe dark fruits, caramel, faint roast, apples, brown sugar, and a nice floral finish. The big sweetness is balanced by a nice hop profile and never becomes cloying. Alcohol is noticeable but light for 10%. A creamy, smooth body that drinks very well.

Brown color. Thick palate and nearly still without carbonation. Good combination of lightly sweet malt and bitter, floral hops. Very nice full palate on this beer.

Deep orange brown copper color with a minimal head. Flavor is complex, with roasted malt, ripe fruits, candy sugar, a bit of alcohol. Medium bodied. Sticky and sweet on the palate. Pretty good beer.

Pours a clear ruby amber with very little cream colored head. Aroma is a bourbon caramel. Faint smell of cooking wine. Flavor is caramel, burnt sugars and caramelized malts. Body is fairly light but stronger carbonation. Alcohol is noticeable. A very smooth barley wine.

Ruby/brown color. Aroma is mainly dominated by sherry-like oxidation. Flavor is also dominated by sherry-like oxidation, but also has some nice elements of raisins, dark fruit, caramel and mixed nut. Decent finish as well, which lasts pretty long. Very oxidized, but still pretty good.

The Dan Journal #182. Tasted 5/30/08. 22oz bomber. Dark and ruby hued. Moldy off-white head. Aromas of vanilla and bananas. Fruity cocoa and bready. Wonderful nose! Full bodied and sticky. Malty and cocoa dust. Chocolate malted milk shake. Big palate. Fun and fresh. Nice roast. Touch maple. Dried dark fruit. Honey and a touch mesquite smoke. Solid!
