The aroma and flavor were dominated by caramel malt with a lot of fruity character hitting the tongue as well. Sweet, as expected, but not enough hops to balance out the sweet for me. Hop profile was predominantly pine but also citrus flavors as well. Good, but no where near my favorite in the barleywine category. blutt59 (2098), Dallas, Texas, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 29, 2008 Bottle. Thanks to Nuffield for this one. A nice rich dark brown amber color with a tan head. Nice and richly hopped with sweet fruity malts and a bitter finish. A solid barley wine. Nuffield (2720), Roseville, Minnesota, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 29, 2008 Fine sipping barleywine. Pours nicely but not in any distinguished way. Has a bright hop aspect with a substantial sweetness and average all around profile for a barleywine. Doesn’t slap you in the face with either alcohol or bitterness. Warms nicely and warms me nicely. A great beer to drink with a great friend. tennisjoel (938), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 28, 2008 Reddish pour. Thin white head. Hoppy aroma with the typical barley wine malts beneath. Something in this beer is just not right. I don’t say this about many barley wines, but I think this is one that needs some aging. Something just doesn’t work here. Not bad by any means, but there are a lot of other BW’s I prefer fresh over this. I would like to think this would only improve with some aging. Give me Old Horizontal or Bigfoot fresh. Next time I buy this I’m giving it at least 8 months or more of aging. Then I can probably give it a fair chance. islay (474), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 28, 2008 Small sample at OSLO and Guerde’s tasting on Friday, 5-23-08. Reddish brown with a gold tint. Dry, quite hoppy, chalky, dusty aroma reminiscent of a barbecue. Dry, dusty taste with some malt sweetness. Alcohol evident in the flavor. Medium body. This is not a bad beer, but it has potential to be a lot better. Skyview (4019), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 26, 2008 Sampled at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits Wednesday evening beer tasting, and shared by BDR and Badgerben. From a 22-oz bomber pours a clear dark reddish amber brew with a thick off-white head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma of light caramel malt, grapefruit and tangerine zest, and a touch of pine. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonated with flavors of chocolate, caramel, grapefruit, pine, and a touch of cinnamon. Finish is semi-sweet with a grapefruit and caramel aftertaste that lingers after the finish. A bit spicy aftertaste is also present. Guerde (699), Welcome, Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 23, 2008 (bottle thanks Lawstudent) Pours reddish brown with an off-white head. Aroma is really strong on hops and smells more like a double IPA, with some strong caramel lurking in the background. Taste is sweet caramel with not as much hops as the aroma would hint at. Pretty well balanced, with a medium mouthfeel. Pretty good barleywine.
