Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bottled. A deep red beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma is sweet matly with strong notes of berries, medium notes of alcohol, and light notes of cinnamon and ginger. The falvor is sweet malty with notes of ginger and caramel as well as light notes of other spices, leading to a dry bitter finish.

very dark amber with vanishing vanilla head, big woody (hehe) and grassy aroma with hops on display, a little on the young side, I agree that a true rating should await some aging on this one. tastes too much like a malt liquor loaded with hops right noo

Deep brandy hue with no head. Aroma is sweet caramel, honey, malt, dried dark fruit. Sweet flavor with a well hidden alcohol finish. Oily flat and sticky. Full bodied. Just incredible.

650ml bottle. Amber brown with thick white head that coats glass as it thins. Caramel, raisin alcohol aroma. Smooth, raisin, warm toffee, bitter pine alcohol with bitter pine after-taste. Unlike other barley wines, this one has huge head that thins but doesn’t disappear. It’s a real bastard.

Copper color with a thin head. Lots of citrus and pine aroma. Big, sweet malt taste with a lot of floral and pine hops. It’s not quite an American style Barleywine, but more of an over-hopped English style. Give the hops a year to fade and this would probably be killer.

Bomber bottle...Mahogany in color with a creamy light tan head...smells quite malty and sweet....some caramel aromas as well mixed with raisins and chocolate....silky thick lo carbonation texture...wonderful aromas are lost in the flavor profile...taste is grains, like a hearty cereal...sweet upfront with a bitter finish consisting of mile grapefruit...its good, but expected more going by the aroma...head lasts through consumption and lacing is present, but dainty...a stickinesses is left on the lips

Dark amber brown in appearance, light tan head. The floral hops on the nose are very intense and crisp with some citrus notes and toffee. On the palate it is very heavy and round, but manages to feel crisp with medium light carbonation. Despite the beer’s weight, it is not heavily malted or sweet. A little bit of banana and burnt toffee in the malt. Rockin hops kick in on the finish with that burnt toffee taste. It finishes very dry though there’s this impression of sweetness that lingers with the finish.

Deep copper body with a nice thick khaki head. Grapefruit with some nice toasted walnuts aroma in the aroma. There is also some nice hot chocolate. Rich notes of toast and light oranges are the main flavors here. There is also some thick, rich jam type character, but close to rasins. This is a massive beer and very thick in the mouthfeel, but scary drinkable. The finish has some notes of toasted bread crust. A nicely made brew that is more on the malty side than I expected.
