Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

A healthy head on this dark brown, but thinner-looking, barleywine. Aromas are a little nutty, with sweet caramel and a white peach kind of fruit. Remarkably smooth palate. Packed with flavor, ultimately astringent and sharp on the palate. Tons of ingredient flavors. They tend to muddle one another out. A blaring siren of a beer.

This is like an old school beautiful barleywine in a new-lookin’ bottle with a goofy label. Totally not hot for the abv and tastes like most other barleywines do after a year or more in the beer cellar. Fantastic.

Bottle. Pours copper/amber with a tan head. Aroma of toasted earthiness and caramel. Full and sweet caramel malt well balanced with grapefuity hops. Very tasty beer, and nicely balanced. I don’t taste the 10% at all.

Bomber->snifter: pours an average, rocky, light brown head on top of a murky, dark brown body. Aroma if cookie, perfume, and leathe. The body is medium, texture is sticky, with soft carbonation. The duration is long (bonus here for me) and is moderately bitter. Definitely a good barley wine--I really enjoyed this one, but couldn’t enjoy more’n a few at one sitting.

Pours a deep copper brown with aSmall off white head. Aroma is moderately sweet grape, caramel, cherry, date and grapefruit. Flavor is sweet caramel, grape, grapefruit, piney and some dough. Full body, sticky texture. Finishes very long and bitter.

Aroma is very pleasing, malty, with a candy-sugar thing happening. The appearance is attractive, a brown/ruby color with a persistent tan head. The taste is very sweet, malty, with a generous amount of hops. The finish is almost all hoips, nice balance to the sweetness of the beer. The mouthfeel is thick, almost syrupy. Nice, respectable barley wine.

22 ounce bottle from jjpm74. Pours dark read with a big sticky khaki head. Candy-ish aroma like cherry Jolly Rancher, and English Toffee. A bit of a citrus juice aroma as well. Very rich too. The flavor features chocolate toffee and caramel with cherry and pine in the finish. Very robust and with no sharp edges. Very full body. Perceived carbonation is on the low side. The finish is sweet, but not cloy. Over all I think this is a really great beer.
