Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Thanks to beerlando. Vanilla, molasses, creamy thick aromas. Pours dark amber. Malty upfront, molasses, smooth, with spicy hops, slightly bitter finish with a slight resin flavor.

Poured a hazy orange color. Nose was citrus, hops, and sweet malt. Taste is a funky fuity, hoppy, pine, and citus collision. Has a soothing alcohol burn going down. Very drinkable beer for 10%, nice session brew. I’m just wondering what age would do to this bad boy.

22oz bottle. Dark red, brown color with a small tan head. Alcohol, alefruit, earthy floral hop aromas. Ruddy caramel, raisins, some alcohol heat. Piney, somewhat fruity hop component. Tinges of toastiness before a malty sweet finish with lingering tropical fruit hop character. Mouthfeel is heavy, somewhat chewy, somewhat hot.

Really dark red with an off-white head that has excellent retention and lacing. Sweet caramel, dark fruits, and toffee are balanced with piney and orange-y hops in the nose. Sweet malt all over the tongue; caramel, dark fruit, and a large amount of bitter, but flavorful hops come through with some pineapple and tangerine. This drinks incredibly smooth to me with a full body and about medium carbonation. I’ll be getting more of this. Extra point added to overall because the flavor is above 8, but not quite a 9 for me.

bottle. pretty good though seemed closer to double/triple IPA than barleywine. I like the hop bill on this. Pours dark amber with a thin white head. Aroma is dominated by sweet caramel malts but you can detect a bit of amarillo grapefruit underneath. Body is thick and rich. Very syrupy and sweet. very piney hop bitterness and reminiscent of bigfoot. alcohol pretty undetectable for 10%

Big bottle pours a crystal clear deep dark amber garnet with a big off white head and lots of lace. The aroma fills the room with resinous hops, dark fruits, sweet caramel malt, and just quite inviting. The flavor is seriously malty, figs, prunes, caramel, and some resinous hop hints that tease more than satisfy. The alcohol is so well hidden. The palate is rich, smooth, and carbonated. I could use more hop flavor, but this works as an English style Barley Wine.

Aromas coming out in layers, first I got Christmas cake with anise, then cam fudge candy finally there came a wave of hops and thats pretty much where it stayed. Right now its like an Imperial IPA, with a sweet caramel pudding and moalssas backing and plenty of bitterness in the finish, its a mosnter in all respects, with just a little to much hopping

Deep amber in color with a small off white head. Aroma- alot of citrus hops- some mango and orange, a good deal of caramelized/crystal malts and touch of alcohol. Taste is tropical fruits, citrus, and light mango, with some sweet caramel malt. Nice and clean profile, with a medium body for the style. Finishes moderately bitter, with a touch of alcohol. pretty nice BW.
