Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Tap @ Big City. Dark red pour, very pretty. Nice and hoppy, but very sweet, which is almost overpowering, and not quite well enough balanced by hop character. Enjoyable nonetheless, and I can certainly say this beer hides its alcohol well.

Pour is dark mahogany red with a sticky soapy off white head...smell is strongly soapy and citricly bitter...taste is sweet and caramel at first, with a light citric bitterness coming on...definitely smells much hoppier...which I think is a good thing...something bright and metallic though...

Lovely golden-brown colour. Cherwy, lightly toasty barley wine nose with hints of alcohol and caramel. Chewy - very English - with slightly grassy/mossy hoppiness and a long sticky finish. Scrape your tongue after tasting this one.

Pours a dark amber, with a average head that forms great great lacing down the glass. Smell is of fruits and figs, but I sense no strong alcohol prescense. There is great balanced between bitters and sweetness. Though, both flavors are at the max here. Strong hop bitterness stays on the tongue for a couple of lip smacks (LOVE IT). Mouthfeel is very silky and velvet like all the way down. This is a super sipper beer for sure, one bottle will be enough for most. I’m really impressed by Southern Tier lately. They have awsome Imperial IPAs, Stouts, and now a Barley Wine. TWO PINTS UP FOR THIS BREW.

Nice middle of the road Barley Wine. Not too hoppy, not too sweet, not too harsh. Pleasant every day BW (everone should have a Barley Wine every day).

Pours a deep ruby, amber colour with a solid one finger head that retains well and leaves densely spotted lacing. The nose consists of piney hops, citrus rind, vinous barley, and weak caramel. The alcohol presence is high, but not 10% high. The flavour is vinous, piney and has a peppery bite, most likely from the booze. The caramel malt backbone is not as strong as I’d prefer, but its definitely there. As for hop flavour, I’m not so much a fan of armarillo and the tropical citrus flavour it produces. The chinook piney bite is nice though. The texture is oily and is softly carbonated.

The loog is a dark amber and it is clear when put up to the light. There is a thin head that last for the entire duration of the beer and the lacing along the sides of the glass are nice and spotted. The nose is full of roated malt and barley. there are also some hints of light fruits but they are very faint. As you drink the beer you can taste alot of cracked peppercorn with some roasted barley and bitter hops. The pepper stays on your palate for a long time after you drink the beer. The finish is full of booze and pepper with those hints of dark fruit and fig.

Pours a dark amber/brown with foamy off-white head. Pleasant aroma of hops, alcohol and dark fruit. Very quaffable for a barley wine especially at 10% ABV. Tons of hops up front with dark fruit and a nice alcohol warmth in the finish.
