Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Small off-white head with a nutty/clear copper body. Aroma is sweet, grape, caramel, some cherry, grapefruit. Tastes sweet, caramel, grape, grapefruit, light spruce. Full body with some stickiness and low carbonation. A nice barley wine.

Man with more carbonation this would have been fantastic! Aroma was strong hops and not much else. Pour was a deep amber/light brown with no head. Taste was very hoppy in the front. So much so that when I burped I thought I felt a pellet come up. The mouthfeel was very thin for a barley wine (which is a plus in my book) but the carbonation was subpar and brought the intensity down. All in all a very good hoppy beer and this beer defines those that blur the lines between IIPAs and barley wines. Nice one!

Bottle. Pours deep amber with a beige head. Aroma is fruity with notes of pine needles and grapefruit. Medium/full bodied, very clean and smooth. Flavor is sweet and fruity with notes of citrus fruit, caramel, and pine. Pretty easy to drink and very enjoyable.

Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Mocha head with good retention leaves spot lacing as it recedes. Caramel and pine aromas. Sticky caramel upfront with a sweet grapefruit finish.

Bomber. Pours a ruby amberwith a white head that diapears quickly but leaves a thin seat. Lacing is great. Aroma is sweet malts, hops and spices. Flavor is sweet malt, hops, rich spices and molasses. Finishes sweet but with bitter hop finish. High abv but hides well. Good beer from an impressive brewery.

Need to let this barley warm up. Had cold at first and it was very different than when it was warm - big, big difference. Very hoppy after it warmed. I went from wanting to bury this beer to really liking it. I have had better barley’s but this is mid pack now. Poured a good head, dark amber color. Could smell the alcohol in it right away. It is only 10 percent so not killer for a barley and probably worth it on the drunk factor.

Nice barley wine. Not too hoppy with this one, as is the case with some. Very well balanced. The pour is a deep dark ruby with a light head. Aroma of fruit, sweet toffee, and some hop biterness. Taste is very balanced. Not as much burn as I expected. Alcohol is barely present. Very nice.

pours dark amber with cloudy beige head with thick lacing. piney-resin on nose(have smelled imp. ipas that are weaker), hops really out front, some dark malt on second passing. very hoppy at 1st, malt kicks in 1/2 way and finishes dry and clean. balanced well, which disquises alcohol %. very good
