Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bomber after shoveling a bunch of snow of my driveway. 07 version via trade a while ago with Jah Noth! (Thank You!) Aroma is wonderful with a nice roasted nut and caramel overtone, a bit of fruity hoppiness, and some raisins and prunes to round out this awesome aroma. Pours a clear ruby color with a two finger thick head that lingers around for a while. Taste is malty with dark fruit intermingled. A lot of stuff going on in the taste of this brew. Smoothing going down and deceptively drinkable. Overall, A darn good barley wine with about a year of age on it. Nice!

A deep ruby reddish pour. Aroma of dried fruit and hints of abv. Malty dried fruit and good finishing bitter with lingering tones of the abv. Full solid mouthfeel and carbonation is good as well. All round good barley wine.

Thanks to decaturstevo for sharing this one. Clear deep amber with a small head. Complex aroma. Big malts that are held in check by some hop bitterness that balances yet lets the big malt shine through. Well done.

Very clear, dark brown/mahogany with a thick beige head. Nice Centennial orange/tangerine hop aroma with some caramel. An easy-drinkin’ barley wine - on the lighter side. Starts with notes of wood, toffee, then PacNW hoppy grapefruit, orange, pine, some pipe tobacco, a little raisin and the lightest twinge of mint. Pleasant sweetness level. As mentioned, this one’s easy drinking so the body is on the medium side with with moderate carbonation. Comes across more like a hoppy/malty American Strong Ale moreso than a barleywine. Overall, good.

Pours clear bronze with a patchy small tan head. The aroma has rich caramelly malt, some nectar fruits and muted old hops. Medium / thick lush body with minor soft carbonation. The flavor starts with thick musty caramel, alcohol heat, toffee and dark fruits. The finish has light spice and more heat. Good barleywine.

1/22/2008: Southern Tier Back Burner Imperial Barley WIne Style Ale smells sweet. It is loaded with sweet citrus orange and caramel maltiness. It has a nice, golden copper-orange color with a thin, lightly frothy ivory head. The carbonation is fine and quite smooth. The flavor begins sweet and has lots of fruity caramel malt. There is some nice roasty caramelized notes in the middle along with some nice sweet citrus orange/tangerine/grapefruit flavor and mild bitterness in the finish. There is some dried fruit (apricot), toffee, and even traces of cigar (or tobacco) flavors as well. No alcohol in the flavor at all. This beer has a very smooth and easy to drink medium body. It is a bit sticky on the lips. Overall it is a fairly well-balanced American-style Barleywine that will probably be even better in another year.

650 ml. bottle / Alc. 10.0% by Vol. / 23° Plato / 85 ibu’s / 15° L / 2-row pale malt, light & dark caramel malt / kettle hops: chinook / aroma hops: willamette / dry hops: amarillo, centennial. Rating #146 for this beer...

Aroma is hops and sweet caramel and sherry. Taste is sweet red fruit, fizzy caramel, and notes of oxidation. Did I mention this was sweet? Very solid beer. Didn’t think it was too boozy, or too much of anything bad. Just well balanced, nice fruity, sweet caramel, and hoppy profile.
