Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

22 oz bottle from JB175. Nice copper color, aroma of hops and dark brown sugar. Flavor is typical barley wine deliciousness. Nice hop bite on this one. My only complaint was a rather harsh flavor as it goes down. Not really an alcohol burn, more of a strange carbonation issue. Anyway, still a pretty good BW.

Bottle (22oz). Clear deep burnt copper colour, large fizzy tan head. Solid citrus/resin/pine hop aroma, well-balanced against alcohol and really roasted malt - more than some lactose and wood chips. Taste - reminds me a bit of a smoother Double Bastard - orange juice, very roasty malt, solid alcohol and resin/citrus hops, bitter, lightly carbonized; warming. Chewy, bitter, astringent and mildly boozy body. Tasty and much smoother than I expected. Must get more!

Pours a clear brown color with a thin white head. Aroma and flavor of hops, malt and something sweet. The body is light to medium with a liquorous texture and soft carbonation.

Bottle via trade. Taste of malt and hops with thick mouthfeel. Sweet, fruit flavor. Hops have mellowed with its age. Slight alcohol burn. Decent BW.

Bomber. Pours a rich-looking ruby color with a thin uneven creamy white head. Sharp floral, spicy hop aroma with a rich fruity maltiness lying below. Nice smooth palate. The hops are definitely in the forefront, but as the finish comes through, a sweet fruitiness comes out. Any more English BW character would’ve been too much. A real solid BW.

bottle. pours a clear dark brownish red with a medium off-white head that won’t quit. smell is nutty and malty with some floral hops and maybe even some berry and wood. taste is caramel malts with some pretty big citrus and floral hops taking over as it fades to a dry and mildly bitter finish. i can feel the alcohol warming way more than i can taste it. medium to thick body with very mild carbonation. a very solid barleywine, if you like the hoppier variety. if not, cellar it for a while, i’m sure the hops will grow more tame as it ages. but i like it as is.
