Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bomber.. Pours a clear copper in color with a white lacey head. This beer is full of malty, sweetness with some dried fruit and caramel flavors. The finish is full and warm with a good bit of alcohol. A pretty solid barley wine.

Short and sweet...I really enjoyed this one from Southern Tier. The sweetness is very well balanced out by the hops so neither taste is overbearing. A nice beer and a nice price at $5.99, I will be drinking this beer again.

Bottle sampled. Pours a dark copper color with a light tan head. Aroma of caramel malts, fruitiness, and some mild citrus hops. Flavor is very well balanced and fairly sweet with dark fruits, sweet malts, light toffee, and notes of grapefruit with a nice bittersweet finish

22oz - First brew 2007 - Aroma is very strong. Raisin, prune, molasses, alcohol, brown sugar and sharp hop bitterness. Pours mahogany with a small head and good lacing. Flavor is a bit more "old house" than the aroma but otherwise matches. Palate is sticky with the alcohol there but not overpowering. Mellow, flavorful and tasty.

Clear toffee body, medium cream head, patchy. Aroma of dense, burnt caramels, toffee, toast, and prickly alcohol. Big, faded citrusy hops punch the palate, coating the heavy, burnt caramel and toast malts with a bitter astringency. Basic, not stretching any boundaries. Southern Tier has a distinct yeast strain that leaves a dusty, slightly medicinal characteristic in all of their beers. Sweetness increases as the beer warms. Not bad, but rather plain.

22-oz bottle received via trade with adam_john. Pours a rubied brown with a spare, fizzy light brown head, mostly diminishing, spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, nutty, caramel), heavy hops (perfume, flowers), average yeast (dough) with notes of brown sugar and pear. Full bodied, gritty texture, lively carbonation and a bitter finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, acidity and bitterness.

22 oz bomber. Dark brown brew with a fast-fading white head. Lovely aroma with a sweet rich maltiness. Strong citrus and a biscuit/cookie dough maltiness. Aroma is quite hoppy but this shows good balance as well. Flavour shows sweet toasty/cookie dough maltiness and sweet grapefruity/orange citrus. Light cherry as well. Slight chewy but nowhere near cloying. Surprisingly drinkable for a such a big beer. Rich and sweet with an orange marmalade flavour. Nice smoky caramelized brown sugar on the back behind all the citrus and biscuit. A lovely elegant beer.
