Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

I’m not a big fan of the barley wines, but the is a deadly brew. Smooth and very easy to drink. At 10%, thats a tough combonation.

(Bottle at Pikkulintu, Helsinki, on 2009-06-10) Beautiful clear reddish brown. Small white head. Malts, tiny amount of raisin and some sweetness in aroma. Full bodied and dry palate with medium carbonation. Malts, bitterness, tine amount of raisin, sweetness, bitterness and grass in taste. Sweetish and bitter aftertaste.

Oh it’s been a while since I had one of these and man is this a tasty one. All sweet and malty with a touch of hops to tide you over. Pours dark copper and a thin off white foam that sticks around for a while. Aroma is molasses and a little bit of citrus. Getting some nut in here the second time around. Flavor is the aforementioned sweet bomb with huge caramel. Some prune and raisin fruit flavors come through and then the bitter pine and grapefruit on the finish. Leaves a little bit of a hot alcohol taste in your mouth. Pretty well balanced and enjoyable all in all.

Murky orange with a medium beige head. Sweet fruity aroma with hoppy notes. Flavour was quite hoppy with pine and, grapefruit and bitter hops. Finished very bitter. I like.

(Bottled) Dark reddish amber with a small head. Mild aroma with dark fruit, warming alcohol, some strawberry (gets a bit stronger when warmed up). Flavor has lots of dried, dark fruit, some warming alcohol, lots of malt. Almost full in body, with very soft carbonation. Not much aroma in this one, but the flavor is pretty nice.

Bottled@Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Amber colour, not much head. Aroma is fruity, wooden and mildly of alcohol. A quite mild flavour for being a barley wine though. Flavour is quite much sweet fruity and nectary notes along with alcoohol and some bittering hops. Also quite big on the malty side. Very wellbalanced and pleasant.

Far far far too sweet. A big glass of syrupy sweet messiness. Trying to get past that the only thing I pulled from this beer that was enjoyable was a nice toasty caramel flavor which should be a more prominent flavor in this wrecking ball of a beer.

Very big thanks to HogTownHarry for sharing this with me. Another Southern Tier product I’ve been wanting to try. Appearance: Ruby red, large white head. Aroma: toast & hops & pine & acorns & mangos & caramel & hops again, malt, not like a barley wine at all, more of an IPA. Flavour: Caramel, vodka, lemon, pine, yeast, sweet, alcohol, long bitter finish, awesome.
