Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Not a bad barley wine. Sweet aroma, caramel and other sweet goodies. Caramel flavor with some hop notes. Nice.

Humorously enough, I cannot read my notes on this beer at ALL. I do have my numbers however. I can sort of make out "fruity honey hop monster"...but could have been describing my wife at this point of that evening.

Sweet candish aroma with some lighter hops. Hazy amber color with a small tan head. Moderately sweet beginning with a alcohol bit in the finish.

Bottle from my ST hook-up Jay. Thanks my friend! Pours a cloudy brownish color. Carmel malt, brown sugar, honey and fruits dominate the aroma. Flavor is heavy on the malty fruitiness with very, very light hops. I liked the caramel and honey notes in this one very much. Good brew.

As usual from Southern Tier, they do it right. Nice brown hazy with extensive foam and lacing. Big malt and caremal flavors, sweet but not too much, not as big as some eg Old Horizontal. but there is plenty here

NIce dark caramel brown with a lovely fluffy head. This beer looks extremely good. I am very impressed. Picked this one up at Five Points Bottle Shop in Athens, Georgia. Aromatic alcohol malt aroma, with a nice sweet malt aroma. Very sweet taste as well. Not very hoppy at the beginning but then it develops into a hoppy taste, but not a very hoppy taste. This isn’t a "mean" barley wine. It doesn’t have that hoppy taste I was hoping for. Overall, the malts are awesome, and the aroma is awesome as well, but the hops are lacking. Pretty good brew.

22oz - Normally, barley wine disgusts me, so I approached this one with some dread. From the first pour I was relieved. The nose was wonderful, a rich malty, creamy, hoppy perfume. The color was great, a lovely hazy amber with a small tan head. There was also some pleasant carbonation here, compared to some of the nearly flat barley wines I’ve tried. Lots of structure on the palate, malt with a healthy dose of hops. I enjoyed this greatly.
