Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

22 oz’er for dessert. Nice roasty brown with a bit of a bubbly top. The aroma is just mildly sugar and doesn’t hint at the nice robust flavors underneath. This drinks with a thick, woodsy character, like a forest in a glass -- brown sugar, pine, caramel. Quite nice. (#3547, 5/20/2009)

Bottle 65 cl. Slightly hazy amber golden with a small, rough, off-white head. Sweetish oxidized aroma of caramel and overripe fruit. Full-bodied, sweetish caramel and overrripe fruit. Subdued bitterness. Your typical all American Barley Wine - yum. 010509

bomber from total wine in norfolk. pours a dark, slightly cloudy amber with hints of ruby and a thin, off-white head with solid lacing. aroma is excellent with with big citrus hops, a great spicy note, pine, and big, toffee malts with a hint of dried fruit. flavor is delicious as well with sweet, caramel malts up front, hints of raisin, date, and roasted nuts, with a great balance of citrus and pine hop bitterness on the finish. palate is full bodied, slightly sticky, with medium carbonation and not the slightest alcohol burn. overall, a damn good brew.

22oz bomber from Ryan at Funky Buddha. Nose is mild but has bits of citrus with alot of yeastiness and caramel malt. The hops in the nose are fairly hidden underneath the intense layers of malt. Complex caramel, fig, prune, and a dash of citrus from the hops but with no hop bitterness. Alcohol very well hidden. This is a very tasty english style barley wine with a bit of an american twist with the hop aromatics. Very well done.

Daytona 500 tasting. Bomber. Clear dark amber with an off white head. Sweet caramel and bread nose, lightly toasty, earthy. Medium full body, decent lace. Piney resin flavors at first, then chewy toasty malt... yum!

On tap at the Peekskill Brewery. Pours a clear ruby orange to brown with a thin white beige head. Plums and prunes, dark fruits, chocolate, and a really big pile of hops. Flavors are similar, dark stone fruit, and malt. Finishes with a nice bit of citrus hops. Really nice hoppy finish with no big alcohol visible.
