Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Clear burgundy pour, with a tiny ring of lace - aroma of dark fruits, carmelized brown sugar, chocolate, background herbal hops - a bit of an oily mouthfeel, but a tiny bit thin - burnt grains and a moderate hop flavor up front, followed by notes of black cherry, plums - herbal, tea-like flavors arrive late, coupling with grassy hops and a clean, raw can sugar sweetness - alcohol warmth crops up in the finish, along with lingering cookie/bready malts and carmelized sugar - one of the better high octane beers from this brewery.

The aroma is very rich with caramel, toffee, grass, butter, nuts, and toasted malt. The appearance is deep amber with a head that is appropriate for the style. The flavor is like the aroma with a bitter and malty finish. The palate is smooth and thick. Overall this is just what you are looking for when you want a Barley Wine.

22oz Bottle: Pours a very deep amber/ruby color with some clarity in the light and topped by a tan head that fades to a film. Nice looking. The aroma is a nice blend of hops and tropical fruits: mango, guava, berries, passion fruit. Also has some sweet candy-like malt notes. The mouth feel is slightly sticky. Has a sweet candy malt character but also has some hop bitterness. There’s also some fruity flavors with a berry-like component and sweeter fruits like mango and guava. There’s a later roasty hint and a minty touch which is warming on the way down. A decent Barley Wine.

Bomber in a blind tasting with Great Divide Old Ruffian and Green Flash BW. This came in 2nd, behind Green Flash. Oily, vinegar, chocolate and roast aroma. Deep and dank. Aroma was unusual for the style yet still fitting, and certainly interesting. Firm, light, sweet, fair body. Not too complex, but zero alcohol burn and as refreshing as a barleywine could be. This is very different but rather enjoyable.

On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown on 03/02/2009. Clear deep amber body with ruby highlights and a medium creamy off-white head. Sweet caramel and fruit aroma with a bit of alcohol. Sweet caramel flavor with some sugary hints and lots of fruitiness. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation and a somewhat syrupy finish.

[726-20071001] 650mL (w/ jerc, Radek Kliber). Malty dough and Belgian yeast aroma. Clear, dark dark red body with a medium foamy off-white head. Dark roasted malt is not too heavy. Medium-full body is a little astringent. Nice and drinkable, therefore a "dangerous beer."
Overheard: "It’s not often you get a 10% beer that is that drinkable."

Bottle, courtesy of Hogtown Harry. Dark ruby red, very little head. Dark fruit aroma, alcohol. Really nice taste - lots of alcohol and lots of hops, real hop bite in this barley wine. Nice fruity linger. Mouthfeel is great - almost quenching and crisp. Really nice stuff.
