Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bottle: The aroma is a combination of chocolate, caramel, oxidation, faint smoke, and mild citrus hops. It pours a transparent garnet with a small off-white head. The flavor starts with lots of chocolate and caramel. There is some light fruitiness in the background. The finish has some light notes of oxidation and very mild citrus hops. The mouthfeel is a tad thin for a Barley Wine.

Appearance: Pours a ruby-colored body with a short-lived, beige head. Smell: A rich, malty sweet aroma with plenty of fruitiness held within notes of black cherries and syrup-soaked plums. Taste: Strong, supporting malt backbone bringing flavors of sweet, charred caramel, dark fruits, and hints of chocolate. The beer certainly needs that malty brace for the sharp hop hit of soapy pine right at the end and into the long, lingering finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body, with a very thick, lush mouthfeel. Drinkability: Its all kinds of decent!

Pours to a viscous mahogany brown body with a creamy tall beige head and awesome lacing. The aroma is hoppy with citrus and has a dusty graininess to it. The hops vanish in the aroma soon after the pour. The flavor is grainy alcoholic malts with a nice creamy toffee and nougat. More old-ale-ish than a barleywine. The palate is medium bodied and creamy. Light bitterness. Flavor has pine resin to it.

Bomber from Secret Santa. Aroma had a good citrus hiting the nose at first. By middle to finish a dirty dish rag aroma appeared. Amber body with tan head. Flavor was sweet thicker textured carmel malt with some citrus hop. Sweetness lingered on the palate but smooth with alcohol not a factor drickable beer.

Deep ruby tinted copper coloured body with a thick tan head - beautiful. This is how a barley wine should look! Aroma of perfectly fresh hops, pine cones, alcohol, malt and oak - very nice. Full-bodied; Strong assertive piney and citrusey hops noticeable up front with alcohol, pit fruits, caramel, oak and more hops tucked in. Aftertaste is well-balanced with a lot of malt for all the hops in the mix. Overall, a good and actually mild barley wine - the alcohol definitely comes out, but it isn’t horribly warming and shows well. I’d recommend this one without a secound guess, except for one thing. I hate American brewers only making certain beers available in 65 cL bottles - ESPECIALLY big beers. I think it’s a stupid enough thing to boycott certain beers - but I obviously have purchased this one. I’d rather have this in a 33 cL bottle at MAX, preferably a 25 cL bottle. Aside from that, it’s a good beer by a fairly consistent brewer! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Clarendon (Arlington), Virginia on 06-February-2009, sampled at home in Washington on 20-April-2009.

22oz bottle pours copper with a fair tan head. Aromas of caramel, grapefruit, pine, and some candi sugar. Flavor is good caramel, candi sugar, and a nice dose of grapefruit and pine hops. Some good pineapple flavor as well shows the balance. Smooth throughout and rather sticky sweet on the palate. Nice barleywine.. I was pleasantly surprised by this one..

22oz bottle, courtesy of scraff (and Dickinsonbeer!). Thanks, Scott! Pours a clear, amber-red color; off-white head with decent lacing. Candy sugar, wet malts, and citrus bitterness in the aroma. Medium-to-full, chewy mouthfeel: plenty of candy sugar, chewy malts, and citrus / floral bitterness; reasonably well-balanced and drinkable. Lengthy, candy sugar finish.
