Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bottle shared by Robert at SL. The pour was light ruby-brown, nice head. Aroma was floral and citrus hops, some caramel and fruity malt character. The flavor followed the aroma, floral hops at the fore, citrus and even pine in the background. Caramel was the primary feature flavor beyond the hops along with some fruity elements. Body was moderate for the style, far from sticky, pretty carbonated too. A nice BWine, on the more drinkable side of things w/in style. Thanks, Robert!

There’s a lot of fruit up front in the nose with orange and apricot between the hops and yeast-produced fruitiness. There’s a relatively slight bitterness in the finish. Pretty tasty.

Bottle: Poured a deep burgundy color ale with a medium foamy head with good retention and some nice foamy head with good retention and some nice lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel malt with some floral malt also discernable. Taste is also a well balance mix between some caramel malt with some notes of toffee, dry fruits with a floral and bitter hoppy ending. Body is slightly above average with some great carbonation and no alcohol was showing. Extreme take on the style but still well balance enough to be enjoyable.

2007 vintage, aged about 10 months. Pours a lightly hazy, reddish-brown color. A small, bubbly, cream colored head leaves scattered spots and snakes of lacing. The nose shows dark, rich caramel, raisons, and earthy, peppery hops. Citrus and other fruits sweeten the nose further. In the mouth, lively carbonation and hot, peppery hops burn slightly, but not too bad. Sweet caramel, brown sugar, and dark, sweet fruits do well to balance things out, but this brew definitely leans towards the hoppy side for a barley wine. Solid brew.

bomber. thanks to eljefe for this. pours clear over ripe plum color with soapy off-white head. nose is very sweet and tropical fruity hops - pinnapple, oh and some green apple in there too. flavor has a rum raisin, dark fruits, slightly charred and bubble gummy, cotton candy, and cookie. abv is well hidden. body is light and mouthfull is thin. i was expecting this to have more hop bitterness due to the hoppy nose but this came off as having an american bw nose with an english bw syrupy sweet flavor. this is what i’d think a hoppy bw blended with a quad would taste like. whatever it is, it isn’t pulled off that well. decent, but i dont think i need to try this again soon.

Pour is dark mahogany red with a sticky soapy off white head...smell is strongly soapy and citricly bitter...taste is sweet and caramel at first, with a light citric bitterness coming on...definitely smells much hoppier...which I think is a good thing...something bright and metallic though...
