Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bottle; poured a murky brown, mahogany with a medium to large off white head. Nice looking. Aroma of chewy caramel, toffee, candi sugar, fruit and orange. Palate was nice and soft. Flavor was bittersweet. Very malty with a finish of orange zest and hops. Had some English barleywine elements to i. Overall it was about average for the style.

2007 Vintage

1/22/2008: Southern Tier Back Burner Imperial Barley WIne Style Ale smells sweet. It is loaded with sweet citrus orange and caramel maltiness. It has a nice, golden copper-orange color with a thin, lightly frothy ivory head. The carbonation is fine and quite smooth. The flavor begins sweet and has lots of fruity caramel malt. There is some nice roasty caramelized notes in the middle along with some nice sweet citrus orange/tangerine/grapefruit flavor and mild bitterness in the finish. There is some dried fruit (apricot), toffee, and even traces of cigar (or tobacco) flavors as well. No alcohol in the flavor at all. This beer has a very smooth and easy to drink medium body. It is a bit sticky on the lips. Overall it is a fairly well-balanced American-style Barleywine that will probably be even better in another year.

Bottle. Thanks to Nuffield for this one. A nice rich dark brown amber color with a tan head. Nice and richly hopped with sweet fruity malts and a bitter finish. A solid barley wine.

Very pretty mahogany red color with a surprisingly long lasting thin white head. Aroma is a big shot of bitter, pine accented hops and slight caramel. Flavor is another huge shot of hops, again mostly pine. Hops here have a bit of roughness to their bittering quality. The caramel accented malt finish has a faint roasted not that is a touch strange. Definite alcohol heat here. Not bad, could be interesting to lay down and see what happens.

Bottle. Sweet aroma, lightly malty with a gentle, nice little citrus and Centennial hop aroma, just a touch of caramel. Huge deep red body, clear with slow medium carbonation and a medium, fizzy, unattractive tanned head. Body is very full and somewhat acidic, hopcit picking up with time, cutting and hefty from the alcohol, and a bit too heavy. Alcohol burn in the fade out. Light bitterness, but the story here is the big, full maltiness. Caramel, toffee, and light figs with somewhat repressed red fruit. Have to say now, I’ve had enough ST to be unimpressed; a good example of how “imperializing” or adding body does not automatically improve a beer.
