Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bottle. Pours a dark ruby-copper body with a small white bubbly head. The aroma has thick juicy hops, fragrant grapefruit, plums, and pineapple. Oily hop flavour in a thick body. Not overly bitter just plainly resinous with some warming alcohol in the background. Apricot and pineapple fruitiness left with some caramel malt sweetness. Very good.

(bottle - 22 oz) Dark copper color with a very thin later of tan foam. Aroma is light with a lot of sweet malts, caramel, toffee, and alcohol. Sweet malts in the flavor with a light toffee middle and a sweet malt flavor that changes bitter near the end. Alcohol is well hidden. Pretty average barley wine.

Reddish amber color out of the bottle with a whispy off white head. Dark sugar, juicy dark fruit and alcohol in the nose. Flavors of pit fruit, candi sugar, caramel, toffee, and orange zest in the finish. I really felt the ABV more than tasted it.

Pours clear bronze with a patchy small tan head. The aroma has rich caramelly malt, some nectar fruits and muted old hops. Medium / thick lush body with minor soft carbonation. The flavor starts with thick musty caramel, alcohol heat, toffee and dark fruits. The finish has light spice and more heat. Good barleywine.

Thanks to decaturstevo for sharing this one. Clear deep amber with a small head. Complex aroma. Big malts that are held in check by some hop bitterness that balances yet lets the big malt shine through. Well done.

bottle Pours dark brown with a two finger head that leaves heavy lacing. It has a rich malt aroma with some dark fruit and oak. The flavor has big up front caramel malt sweetness blending into a substantial hops presence. There is a medium to full body and some of that 10 percent abv is apparent but not in a bad way. Good stuff.
