Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a chestnut color with a small tan head. The aroma was a complex mix of sweet malts, pineapple, pear, apple, caramel and bourbon. A bit heavy on the alcohol though on the nose. The flavor was sour, lightly bitter and had notes of fruity hops, caramel and nut. The finish was short, sour and malty. Good but not great.

$9 for a brown bomber. I think the label has a 12" subwoofer on it. Sweet and hoppy fragrance. Dark iced tea color., tea froth for a head. Strong pillaging high alky imperial beer impact on the palate. If there is carbonation, the shock on the tongue is too alarming for me to know it. Rape and plunder my mouth while roto-tilling across the back of my throat. Typical, nasty big barleywine character. Rude and crude to the last drop. Finish is unpleasant oily coating terrible. Yep, right on style.

Rich ruby in colour, lingering tan coloured head, some patchy lacing. The aroma is very hoppy, some citrus, quite herbal, some alcohol, caramel sweetness, very fresh. The flavour is very hoppy again, moderate alcohol, light spice, lots of caramel, huge amount of citrus. Rich and chewy mouthfeel, medium/large body, high carbonation. Finishes long, very warm, some citrus. A hot and hoppy barley wine, quite good. It made me more and more thirsty as I drank this. Fantastic aroma, quite smooth.

Bottle: Rusty copper colored pour with a light tan head. Aroma, caramel and brown sugar, some floral notes. Flavor, caramel, very malt forward, some earthy notes, sugars, and some slight spices. Alcohol didn’t really come through much to me, some bitterness on the finish. Not bad.

Bottle in trade from orbitalr0x. Thanks man!
Pours amber with a light beige head in a snifter. Smell is rich caramel, red ale like maltiness and light hops in the nose. Taste is sweet, smooth caramel and nicely balanced with hops. Medium bodied and very easy drinking for a barley wine with no hint of the 10% ABV. Good with nothing particularly standing out, but one that I’d definitely not turn down trying again.

22oz bottle. Pours a completely hazed ruby brown with a small beige ring. Nose was mostly toasted and caramel malts with some pine and booze. Flavor was again very sweet and malty with a light hop bite. Finish was sweet and a lot less bitter than expected.....a great Barley Wine.

22 oz. bottle my mother-in-law brought back from NY - Pours a slightly hazy brown color with a half finger thick off white head which settles to a fine film. Faint spotty lacing. Aroma is full of sweet fruity esters and doughy malt. The flavor is also full of esters and lightly sweetened malt. The alcohol is noticeable and lingers a tad on the palate. Medium to full body. A nice sippin’ BW.

A deep ruby reddish pour. Aroma of dried fruit and hints of abv. Malty dried fruit and good finishing bitter with lingering tones of the abv. Full solid mouthfeel and carbonation is good as well. All round good barley wine.
