Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Courtesy of ibrew2or3. Pours copperish, off white head. Aroma, grainy, fruity ( banana / vanilla) Taste, hoppy, caramel, barley, light chocolat, malty. Drinkable, but not memorable. Still a veryd ecent barley wine.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a clear mahogany with a moderate light tan head that left partial lacing on the glass all the way to the bottom. Very pleasant sweet aroma of caramel and fruit. The flavor is a bit on the sweet side with caramel being the dominant flavoring along with some raisins and apples. Really not much of an alcohol burn to speak of. Nice buttery mouthfeel. Good stuff.

Nice well hopped aroma fairly piney a good amount of carmel some raisens the hops definatelly fade when in an open glass. Pours a muddy brown w/ a full tan well laced head. Palate is pretty avg in my book a little thinner than I’d like for a big beer. Flavor is big and full, carmels some light raisens hints of apples almost a bit of dry wood and a light pine. almost like a dry hopped old ale.

Deep amber in color with a small off white head. Aroma- alot of citrus hops- some mango and orange, a good deal of caramelized/crystal malts and touch of alcohol. Taste is tropical fruits, citrus, and light mango, with some sweet caramel malt. Nice and clean profile, with a medium body for the style. Finishes moderately bitter, with a touch of alcohol. pretty nice BW.

Ken’s Thirsty Thursday Throw Down - Clear dark amber, thin lightly tanned head. Dank fruity hop nose with softer toffee and caramel tones. Pulls out some lighter vinous notes upon further warming. Flavor was front loaded with dark fruity tones and huge sweet hop notes. Falls a bit to the sweet side of balance. Medium to full bodied, soft slick carbonation, light bittersweet finish. Enjoyable now, but some age might do it wonders....

WOW! Damn good beer. ST never dissapoints me, no matter what they put out. Colour is a beautiful ruby red-slight mahogay colour. Sweet, big ass vanilla coloured head. Aroma is enticing with its caramel, carrot cake, cinnamon and berry scent. All sorts of flavours. a little hotness initially, but its expected at 10%. Even a little biscuity near the finish. Apples and a little ginger. Another winner from Southern Tier.

Malty caramel sweet smell with maybe some hops in there. The look is amber colored with a decent beige colored head. The taste is a caramel, hops, alcohol, sweet, and malts.
