Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

22 oz bottle thanks to eyedrinkale in Denver. Nice brown with little head. Aromas of classic barley wine. Dark fruits. raisin and plum. Molasses. Flavors were similar with some alcohol on the finish. Pretty good.

WOW! Damn good beer. ST never dissapoints me, no matter what they put out. Colour is a beautiful ruby red-slight mahogay colour. Sweet, big ass vanilla coloured head. Aroma is enticing with its caramel, carrot cake, cinnamon and berry scent. All sorts of flavours. a little hotness initially, but its expected at 10%. Even a little biscuity near the finish. Apples and a little ginger. Another winner from Southern Tier.

Bottle sampled at stevo’s. Pours dark copper with thin beige head. The aroma is sticky caramel and resinous hops. The flavor is maple, caramel, and sticky pine. Plenty of hop flavor without harsh bitterness. Smooth and dangerous.

Ruby red with lasting caramel crème on top to serve as the head. Aroma ignites with rhubarb, bing cherries, singed cherry toffee and vats of prunes basking in broiled red currant sauce. A honey suckle rose slides with the cherry pipe tobacco for a deep delving zing unto the nose. Flavor is equally amplifying and incredibly balanced. Lovely cherry toffee caramel cubes melt into the mouth with a succinctness that’s heavenly. Soft, somber carbonation gives further thickness to the body. Rustic, earthen bitters support the amaretto brandy sauce that weaves through the red currant, albeit drizzled on a honey graham crust once lined with rhubarb and black cherries. Thick body and a lovely mouthfeel, with a deceptive alcohol presence that remains hidden all the way, thanks to the cherry plum sauce and lightly burnt outs that fade into the finish. Many thanks for the bomber, tpkenned!

I was drinking this with hot sausage, and it was almost a drain pour. The alcoholic heat was magnified. I didn’t base my rating on that though. Reddish brown, moderate head, decent lacing and retention. Aroma is grapefruit, pine, caramel, floral, various fruits. More or less what you’d expect from an American style BW. Fairly sweet finish with detectable alcohol, but also a fair share of hop bitterness. Overall I thought it was decent but there was too much heat for my liking. It definitely has aging potential though.

An amber apperance with a white head. Some molasses, raisins, and brown sugar in the aroma. The flavor is quite sweet with some caramel, raisins, brown sugar, and molasses. A very warming and nice beer.

On tap @ Coles Buffalo NY. Enjoyed this with Dan from Pizza Plant. Not ususally a big fan of BW’s but this I liked. Syrupy & sweet with a nice hop backbone. Similar to Bigfoot but not as complex. well done

Thanks to OldGrowth for this one! Bright orange pour, slight haze and fluffy off white head. Sweet malts and light hops on the nose. Dark fruits, grapefruit, pine, and alcohol
