Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Daytona 500 tasting. Bomber. Clear dark amber with an off white head. Sweet caramel and bread nose, lightly toasty, earthy. Medium full body, decent lace. Piney resin flavors at first, then chewy toasty malt... yum!

Bottle at 5 O’Clocks in Stevensville, MI. Hurrah, they finally offer a few decent beers here. This ambiguously colored beer (reddish brown / copper / mahogany / red) seems to change with the lighting. It poured with a decent beige/tan head and a toffee and plum aroma. The flavor is rich and sweet, and features dark fruit, roasted malt, a few spices and a light alcohol trail. I certaintly enjoyed it.

Pretty decent stuff. Clear, brown, burnt caramel colored. Caramel with citrus and alcohol aroma. Flavor is fairly sweet with a decent kick of bitterness that lasts a goodly amount of time. Thick syrupy body.

The pours is nice and burgundy brown with a one finger creamy tan head. The nose is malty, sweet, raisiny, caramel, mild phenolic character, some alcohol, pungent, some fruit. The flavor is malty, some caramel, alcohol, fruity, mildly spicy, some citrus hop character. The palate was thick and warm with a nice mild carbonation.

Bottle sampled. Pours a dark copper color with a light tan head. Aroma of caramel malts, fruitiness, and some mild citrus hops. Flavor is very well balanced and fairly sweet with dark fruits, sweet malts, light toffee, and notes of grapefruit with a nice bittersweet finish

22oz bomber, no date from markwise--thanks! Pours a clear copper auburn with a one finger beige head, fair retention. Old pine hops up front with some cereal grain and scorched toffee, alcohol behind with some fruity raisins and sweet cherries (no cherry tang noted). The flavor was more grainy with the toffee following. Didn’t seem as fruity, either. The alcohol still showed, though didn’t seem 10%--seems a little underattenuated and thick. Bitterness peaked at a 3, and added some light roast and dark chocolate notes. Thick full body with light to moderate carbonation. Maybe this beer should be consumed fresh, but I still don’t think I’d love it.
