Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Man with more carbonation this would have been fantastic! Aroma was strong hops and not much else. Pour was a deep amber/light brown with no head. Taste was very hoppy in the front. So much so that when I burped I thought I felt a pellet come up. The mouthfeel was very thin for a barley wine (which is a plus in my book) but the carbonation was subpar and brought the intensity down. All in all a very good hoppy beer and this beer defines those that blur the lines between IIPAs and barley wines. Nice one!

Pour is a dark red with a large tan head. Aroma is excellent with a strong dose of hops followed by some vanilla and oak. Flavor is brown sugar and citrus fruit with some aggressive hops. This is a very well made barley wine with a big hoppy profile.

Deep mahogany pour with tan head. Very intensely sweet and alcoholic nose. The flavor is dominated by very darkly roasted malt, roasted barley, dark fruits, and finishing on a pretty strong alcoholic burn on the tonsils. A touch sticky-sweet texture that coats the mouth like syrup. Very nicely brewed winter warmer ( though consumed today on a 92degree July afternoon.)

Thin dense head of fine beige bubbles. Sweet caramel malts and lots of hops in the aroma. Some toffee and a bit of alcohol. Dark crimson brown in color. Sweet and malty flavor with a nice alcohol kick. Bit sticky yet the body seems a bit on the thin side. Kind of vegetal in flavor. More caramel and dough. Bit dry with a light bitterness from the alcohol. Finishes sweet and malty with a lingering dry pasty aftertaste. Hides its alcohol pretty well. A decent barleywine.

Sampled at Stevofest 08, courtesy of Decaturstevo. Yet another beer with illegible notes. Pours dark copper with a beige head. Typical but good rich caramel malty aroma. Flavor of caramel, maple, nuts and ? Can’t read my notes. Tame bitterness. Too much alcohol on the finish which brought this town a tad for me. Still very good, and Southern Tier has been impressing the hell out of me with their big beers lately.

Bottled: Pours deep amber red with a small head. Malty aroma that has notes of fudge and marshmallows. Flavour is sweet and malty with notes of fudge and liquorice. Finish is hop and alcohol bitter.
