Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Hoppy. This tastes hoppy. Soapy and hoppy. The nose is weak. It smells like an IPA. The hops completely overwhelm the barley and malts. I like my barley wines to be chewy and malty. I like ’em thick and earthy. This just doesn’t do it for me. However, I actually like the beer. As a barely wine, I pass. It is overly hoppy, thin malt character, a copper color, and a small head. If you haven’t had it, it’s not bad to pick up. If you’re looking for a non-IPA barley wine, then move along, there are no droids here.

bomber.....pours a dark ruby brown with a thin film of off-white head....caramel malt makes up most of the nose along with a small hop backbone....flavors start off sweet with the chew malts being the main player here. it quickly fades and then an astringent hop surge mixes in and both fight for the attention from there on out. i didn’t think it was a smotth as it could be. the hops leave a bit too much bitte astringency for me to enjoy this more.

Bottle into snifter. Deep ruby amber with a thin off white head. Rich cereal malt aroma with hoppy resin notes, a bit of alcohol is detectable in the nose. Taste is very sweet malt with a lot of bitterness for balance. Also, there is caramel, chocolate, and dark fruits. Mouthfeel is chewy and creamy, and finishes bitter with some detectable alcohol. Overall, pretty good, drinkable barley wine that is accessible to those who haven’t really developed the palate for this style, and yet interesting enough to be pleasing to the beernerd.

Clear red with a sticky tan head. Huge candied hop and caramel malt aroma. Gigantic hop flavor, resinous and ever so smooth. Rather light in body. The alcohol is quite apparent. Mild bitterness for the size. Has some vegetable notes that detract.

Clear, transluscent dark amber, mahogany colored body, with barely a head at all. Sugary-sweet aroma, with a full nose of sweet plums, and mild malts and sugar cane. Brightly flavored. Mostly a pleasant earthiness coupled with smooth vanilla notes and lots of strawberries, plums, figs (m favorite!). Quite good, and very easy to drink.

Dark ruby color with a big tan head. Aroma of caramel malts, fruit and citrus hops. Flavor is very sweet, with flavors of berries, raisons and some hops.

Clear dark amber pour, creamy off-white head. Caramel, plum, raisin, molasses, sweet bread, and some nutiness. A nice barleywine, I enjoyed it. Nothing that makes it really stand out though.

Thank you Holdenn for sharing this beer. Red brown with nice brown head. Lots of fruit in the nose, especially strawberry and some pineapple, sweet malt and some dough. Flavor is unlike any barley wine I had tasted before, lots of sweet fruit, slight pine bitterness, some dough. Full body. Very tasty and well done, but defintely not a big hop bomb like most American style barley wines.
