Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Pours a real nice clear deep purple amber color with a tad bit of bubbly white head that leaves a film. Aroma is sweet caramel malts and hops which are a mix of grapefruit and pine. Flavor is a real nice smooth fruity taste - like sweet plums and real real dark cherries - then finishes an earthy oaky hoppiness with a warm alcohol finish. Overall, a real nice barleywine.

Pours a copper color with a tan head. Aroma is of caramel, dark fruits, pine hops, some alcohol, and some spices. Thick on the palate with caramel and sweet malts, dark fruits and finishes with lots of pine hops. Bitter finish with some alcohol that lingers. Not sure I really like the amount of hops on this barley wine. I know that plenty of Southern Tier beers are hoppy but leave it to those ones and not the barley wine.

Bottle. Amber body, medium light tan head, malty, slightly fruity nose. Sweet body, mild flavor for a big beer, tasty, balances hops and malt well. Hides alcohol well.

Deep mahogany colored liquid accompanied by a thin off-white head. Rich fruity aroma, notes of figs, plum, and some lightly toasted malts. Pine-like hops and a moderate bitterness are accompanied by light citrus notes and hints of roast/toast. Light caramel sweetness near the finish followed by another dose of hop bitterness.

A healthy head on this dark brown, but thinner-looking, barleywine. Aromas are a little nutty, with sweet caramel and a white peach kind of fruit. Remarkably smooth palate. Packed with flavor, ultimately astringent and sharp on the palate. Tons of ingredient flavors. They tend to muddle one another out. A blaring siren of a beer.

I was kind of overwhelmed at the beer store today with the choices of southern tier. they finally had jah-va and now they had a few new ones, backburner and hoppe. I actually bought this because it was $8 which is cheap for a bomber in philadelphia, unfortunately. I like the hop bill on this. Pours dark amber with a thin white head. Aroma is dominated by sweet caramel malts but you can detect a bit of amarillo grapefruit underneath. Body is thick and rich. Very syrupy and sweet. I think i’ve nailed centenniel down. very piney hop bitterness and reminiscent of bigfoot. A hoppy BW, which is my style, but a little too sweet. very enjoyable, but necessitates sipping. I’m glad you can’t detect the alcohol.
