Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Dark reddish brown with a thin brown head. Aroma is beautiful, floral and hoppy. Taste is same, aggressively hopped and sweet; perhaps even a little grapey. $6/22oz

Bottle: Cloudy brown color with a strong alcohol and cough syrup aroma with an added earthiness. Powerful to the taste. Sweet with a little alcohol burn. Very tasty and easily enjoyed. I could throw one of these back at least once a week in the evenings during the winter.

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter has a ruby brown color and a thin layer of frothy light tan head that fell quickly. initial aroma had some hops that diminished leaving a thickly malted brew. caramel malt, alcohol, and faint fruit became the main aroma. mouth feel is medium full and fairly thick. flavor is richly malted, brown sugar sweetness, alcohol is noted (but this is 10%), bitters pickup as it warmed with light spice and dark fruit coming through.

Poured a clear, dark copper color with a short, creamy off-white head. The aroma was lots of brown sugar, vanilla, malt and some light hoppiness. The flavor was dominated by chewy, toffee-like malts. Some spicy hops and a bit of citrus come out as it opens up. Medium bodied mouthfeel. Almost sticky.

22oz bottle. Dark red, brown color with a small tan head. Alcohol, alefruit, earthy floral hop aromas. Ruddy caramel, raisins, some alcohol heat. Piney, somewhat fruity hop component. Tinges of toastiness before a malty sweet finish with lingering tropical fruit hop character. Mouthfeel is heavy, somewhat chewy, somewhat hot.

Bottle courtesy of shadey. A nice, well rounded bw w/ more hop presence than most. Nicely done. Smells like an IPA.

Reddish pour. Thin white head. Hoppy aroma with the typical barley wine malts beneath. Something in this beer is just not right. I don’t say this about many barley wines, but I think this is one that needs some aging. Something just doesn’t work here. Not bad by any means, but there are a lot of other BW’s I prefer fresh over this. I would like to think this would only improve with some aging. Give me Old Horizontal or Bigfoot fresh. Next time I buy this I’m giving it at least 8 months or more of aging. Then I can probably give it a fair chance.
