Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

It’s well-made, well presented, looks amazing, but this flavor is so unpenitrable to me... not a good experience. Tasted like cough syrup with Jaeger. I wish I was lying, was looking very forward to it. Roasty malt turns into burnt, fruit is surpassed by allspice: reminiscent of burnt refried beans.

I thought this was an exceptional barley-wine. Hoppy, approachable, and (like most Southern Tier beers) a highly attractive appearance. I’d definitely recommend. Most Southern Tier beers have a clear body and brilliant color, and this beer is no exception. It had a copper color and voluminous cumulus-cloud head. Aroma is strongly of hops, almost like a DIPA. Flavor is strongly malty but balanced with a real wallop of hop bitterness and some citrus. Conceals its 10% ABV quite ably. Mouthfeel is certainly stout enough, but still is quite drinkable and mostly dry in my mouth. I would highly recommend this beer. I bought this bottle at 3 Cellars in Franklin, WI.

Clear but dark ruddy copper, with a good sized, lasting off white head. Nose is fairly sweet with caramel notes, and a strong piney, grassy hop profile. Flavor is quite sweet, with a bit of tobacco, plums, raisins. Quite bitter, but nicely balanced. Good, creamy mouthfeel.

Poured from a 22oz bomber and served in a snifter. This barley wine poured a dark, copper brown with a short-lived head of fine, tan bubbles. Some spotty lacing was left behind. The aroma of the beer was made up of roasted caramel, sugar, mild alcohol, and some citric hops. The flavor consisted of rich caramel, a hint of chocolate, dark fruits, oranges, caramelized sugar, and a touch of dried apricot. Not really any noticeable alcohol in the taste. The mouthfeel was full-bodied but not overly thick or sticky. Very minimal carbonation. Big and malty, yet quite drinkable. Pretty good.

Sweet candish aroma with some lighter hops. Hazy amber color with a small tan head. Moderately sweet beginning with a alcohol bit in the finish.

Pours a deep rich amber color with offwhite head and tons of lacing. Aroms is of caramel malt, toffee, citrus hops, alcohol and light amount of fruit. Taste is the same with a bit of a vegetal mixed in. Palate is full bodied with a bite. Not bad, but nothing to write home about.

Bottle. Pours dark reddish amber with a filmy light tan head that accumulates as bubbles at the edge of the glass. Aroma is sweet, resinous and floral. Very sweet flavor is slightly cloying with a body of rich chocolatey malt and a dark chocolate lingering bitterness. Bitterness up front. Full bodied.
