Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bottle. Pours clear brown, with a thin tan head. Impressive burnt malt and alcohol aroma. Super sweet, with a caramel flavor and less alcohol than in the aroma. Very smooth, with a decent finish for such a sweet beer.

Bottle. Pours dark reddish amber with a filmy light tan head that accumulates as bubbles at the edge of the glass. Aroma is sweet, resinous and floral. Very sweet flavor is slightly cloying with a body of rich chocolatey malt and a dark chocolate lingering bitterness. Bitterness up front. Full bodied.

Pours brown with a medium white head. Strong caramel and raisin aroma. Flavor has caramel, raisin, hops, orange, and a bit of brown sugar. ABV is apparent, but not overpowering. Finishes slightly syrupy. Good!

22 oz bottle from JB175. Nice copper color, aroma of hops and dark brown sugar. Flavor is typical barley wine deliciousness. Nice hop bite on this one. My only complaint was a rather harsh flavor as it goes down. Not really an alcohol burn, more of a strange carbonation issue. Anyway, still a pretty good BW.

Bottle shared by Robert at SL. Color was light brown, decent head. Smelled sweet. The flavor was floral hops/citrus and pine. It also had a great fruity taste to it. It was really carbonated. Good Barley wine. Thanks Robert for letting me try this!

Aroma is very malty and roasty. Pours a dark copperish brown with tan head. Nice strong malt flavor dominates the palate at first, morphing into a sweet note that fades quickly. Not the most memorable Barleywine - but not the worst either. Could use some more hops.

Pours a lasting film and ring of beige head with a copper body. Aromas of barley and resin hops. Caramel, resin, and cocoa flavors with a sticky, bitter finish. Balanced very well.

Bottle shared by sliffy. Deep crimson pour with a light tan head. Aroma of earhy/spicy/citrus hops coupled with caramel malts. Flavors of earthy hops, light coconut and cinnamon and a tinge of smoke. Solid body, soft carbonation with a bitter/spice finish.
