Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Sampled at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits Wednesday evening beer tasting, and shared by BDR and Badgerben. From a 22-oz bomber pours a clear dark reddish amber brew with a thick off-white head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma of light caramel malt, grapefruit and tangerine zest, and a touch of pine. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonated with flavors of chocolate, caramel, grapefruit, pine, and a touch of cinnamon. Finish is semi-sweet with a grapefruit and caramel aftertaste that lingers after the finish. A bit spicy aftertaste is also present.

2007 bomber. Poured healthy medium orange with a swirly dusting of off-white head. The aroma had rich aged caramel with notes of toffee joining.. hoppage appeared to be moderate to high with fruity and floral character showing.. warm and well-done. The flavor had primarily caramel at the core spiked by alcohol warmth.. bitterness was prominent on the edges with a dry, aged feel (herbal and fruity).. finished spicy and quite strong, losing a little balance. Heavier-bodied and syrupy at times on the palate.. sweetness was grainy from the middle to the back.. bitterness rose with and seemed to be amplified by boozy warmth, and this worked very well.. long, memorable, tasty finish.

Thanks Derek, this was good drinking for a young fresh BW.The malt was enjoyable in the aroma, there was lace on the opaque brown. Amarillo and C-hop. Appropriate above-average carbonation. Above average mouthfeel.

Bottle (22oz). Clear deep burnt copper colour, large fizzy tan head. Solid citrus/resin/pine hop aroma, well-balanced against alcohol and really roasted malt - more than some lactose and wood chips. Taste - reminds me a bit of a smoother Double Bastard - orange juice, very roasty malt, solid alcohol and resin/citrus hops, bitter, lightly carbonized; warming. Chewy, bitter, astringent and mildly boozy body. Tasty and much smoother than I expected. Must get more!

Bottle 650 ml
Appearance :Ruby, clear ale with good creamy / porous top. Decent lace left behind.
Nose :Fine refined alcohol, some roast notes. Smooth and clean , malty.7+
Flavour/Palate : Clean medium , full bodied ale. Solid malt base . Surprisingly refined for such potent brew . Sweet fruity aftertaste. At 10 % felt more like mid 8s.Neat prime example of this style. It’s more a bout clean alcohol paired with grain than hops.

This barleywine pours a deep amber color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized beige foamy head. The aroma is caramel, dark fruit and earthy. A medium to full bodied barley wine. The malts are caramel and sweet. The hops are earthy. This BW is very much in the English style, malty sweet and earthy, with a touch of toffee at the finish. Nice balance. The carbonation is a touch low. Hides the alcohol very well. Nice beer. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet with a hint of toffee.

Bottle. Dark mahogany brown body with a small fluffy beige head. (4+) Aroma of alcohol and hops, and underlying sweet malt, hints of brown sugar. (7+) Soft hoppy bitterness up front coasts the mouth with a lingering warming alcohol residue that allows the sweet brown sugary malt middle to quietly sneak past. Hints at dark fruit (briefly) and dark sugar. Smooth medium palate feels a touch heavier than it would with more carbonation, but is nice the way it is. This was quite nice. A very solid, malt forward barley wine.

This bottled brew from JSquire at a rating party poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized tan mostly diminishing colored bubbles that left behind a softly carbonated transparent red brown colored body and a poor lacing. The aroma was softly floral with hop and malt notes. The mouth feel was tingly from start to finish. The flavor contained notes of barley-wine like hops and malts. Hehe not a great description of a Barley wine "Uh its like a barely wine!" DOH must have had a few to drink by then Lil.
