Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bomber. Pours a slightly hazy deep amber with a thinning off white head and good lacing. Aroma is tropical fruits- passion fruit and mango, citrusy hops, moderate crystal malts, light sweetness, similar to Green Flash, even a bit of alcohol burn on the nose as it warms. More fruity and citrusy hop flavor, with some light floral and herbal hints, light sweet caramel malts, nothing too big, some earth in the end, and a bit more alcohol. Body is medium- not too syrupy or thick. Good easy drinking barleywine.

Bottle (650ml). Pours a clear deep ruby with a large mostly-lasting beige head. Looks great! Nice sweet malty aroma with a good amount of c-hops, some fruit and brown sugar. Flavour is fruity and malty with plenty of hops, a bit of alcohol and a long bitter finish. Holy shit that’s easy to drink! What’s the abv on this sucker? 10%? You wouldn’t know it. Medium to full bodied. Really good stuff, I have no problem drinking a bomber of this.

22-oz bottle received via trade with adam_john. Pours a rubied brown with a spare, fizzy light brown head, mostly diminishing, spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, nutty, caramel), heavy hops (perfume, flowers), average yeast (dough) with notes of brown sugar and pear. Full bodied, gritty texture, lively carbonation and a bitter finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, acidity and bitterness.

Pours a mostly translucent ruby/orange amber with a larger foamy/creamy lighter tan head that left a bunch of spotty/sticky lacing. Aroma of dark fruits, caramel, touch of vanilla, dried fruits, floral notes, nuts and toasted grains. Flavor was pretty much a match of the aroma with some of the toasted malt and caramel taking a front seat along with the dried and dark fruits. Getting some more hops in the flavor but they seem to be making their way out of this beer at this point. I did not have this one fresh and it’s at least over 6 to 8 months old at this point, which is on the young side for a barley wine, but enough time for the hops to step down. Wishing I tried this fresh now too. At 10% not getting too much alcohol, which is a good thing.

22 oz bottle. Man, this shit is hoppy. It does burn the back of the mouth with stinging hops. There’s quite a bit of maltiness to try to balance it out, Some smoky tobacco as well.

Bottle from jsquire. Thanks, Jeff! Small tan head that mostly diminished, very little lacing, transparent, very little carbonation, and a reddish hue. Nose was malty, caramel, hoppy, dried fruit, and a hint of clove. The flavor was malt, caramel, hoppy, dried fruits, some bitterness, semi-sweet, some hints of the ABV. Fairly smooth mouthfeel and medium-full bodied. Very quaffable brew, nicely done, worthy of a try and I would drink this again.

Bottle. Ruby tinged amber. Small tan head. Nose is toasted malts, toffee, chewy caramel, some fruit notes and hops. Taste is hoppy and fruity with more toffee and chewy caramel notes, sweet malts, toasted notes and perhaps some brown sugar. Bit of alcohol and pine coming through as well. Body is thick and at times syrupy. Carbonation moderate. Finishes with more fruit notes, hops, light pine, toasted malt, sweet malts, dark fruits, alcohol, caramel, spicy notes and toffee.

22oz bomber via trade with someone that is escaping my mind, and hmm. Honestly I’ve lost my mind because I should know. If you see my rating alert my drunken brain. I was just about to drink a porter and I realized I want a BW. Pours dark dark amber almost no light in but a bit through the head. The head is thing third finger with a tan color. The nose is complex but subtle, with fruit, maltiness, a touch of hops and a bit of candy sugar. The taste is remarkably smooth, sweet and yummy. Wow that is a very very smooth Barley Wine, that I doubt has much age on it. This is a somewhat hopy BW not bad after a DIPA, this is damn nice. Another great one from Southern Tier.
