Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bottle at 5 O’Clocks in Stevensville, MI. Hurrah, they finally offer a few decent beers here. This ambiguously colored beer (reddish brown / copper / mahogany / red) seems to change with the lighting. It poured with a decent beige/tan head and a toffee and plum aroma. The flavor is rich and sweet, and features dark fruit, roasted malt, a few spices and a light alcohol trail. I certaintly enjoyed it.

Bottle at home. Clear orange red coloured with a medium sized off white head. Sweet and fruity aroma of peavhes and apricots, hops, dried fruits and alcohol. Sweet flavour of fruits, dried fruits, hops and liquorice with notes of caramel, alcoholc and grape fruits. Dry hoppy and warming alcoholic finish. Well balanced.

Bottled@Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Amber colour, not much head. Aroma is fruity, wooden and mildly of alcohol. A quite mild flavour for being a barley wine though. Flavour is quite much sweet fruity and nectary notes along with alcoohol and some bittering hops. Also quite big on the malty side. Very wellbalanced and pleasant.

22oz bottle pours copper with a fair tan head. Aromas of caramel, grapefruit, pine, and some candi sugar. Flavor is good caramel, candi sugar, and a nice dose of grapefruit and pine hops. Some good pineapple flavor as well shows the balance. Smooth throughout and rather sticky sweet on the palate. Nice barleywine.. I was pleasantly surprised by this one..

Pours a slightly hazy deep red with a medium off white head. Smells of dark fruits, malts, and a little hops come through as well. A little sweet cinnamon is present too. Taste has some good dark fruits, semi-sweet, with a big malt backbone. The hops come into play a little in the end which had some light brown sugar symptoms too. Lively carbonation, but easy drinking brew. Good.

A Mes rate. Bottle at the Weekend of Tarts After Tasting.
Dark amber with a good off white head. Really good hoppy stuff. Very fruity, lots of lychee and pine plus a good hit of tropical fruit. Lasting bitter finish. Really drinkable for the abv. Can’t help but like Southern Tier.

Bottle: Pours a dark brown with a slight red glow. The head is ever so slight in the tan range. I gathered a good smell of floral hops and some toffee in there. As I began to drank, I noticed that this thing feels thick and syrupy... not a bad thing. The taste was exactly like them smell, with the toffee being up in the foreground while the floral hops didn’t come out until the aftertaste. As I continued drinking, this thing started to have a piney feel to it as well. Not exceptional, but good overall.
