Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

THOUGHTS: A good beer, but not incredible or anything. Not really the best barley wine. It was missing that special Barley Wine smell and taste. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark red with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished, but left good lacing. The lace was thin, but there was lots of it. The aroma was moderate caramel malt, moderate pine hops, cherry, red wine, alcohol and ever so slight Band-aid. The flavor started out very sweet and finished rather bitter with a little sweetness. There was caramel, a little chocolate, brown sugar, a little cherry, a little alcohol, and pine hops at the end. The medium to full body was a little syrupy and sticky on the lips with soft carbonation and a light astringent and light alcoholic finish.

22 oz bomber purchased at Oak Tree. Pours rather good looking for a barley wine with a deep mahoganey brown body and a small to average size frothy light biege head. Sweet aroma with notes of caramel, toffee, honey, citrus and a hint of earthy grass as well. Full bodied with light carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Sweet flavor with notes of caramel, toffee and brown bread that is just slightly dry. Once again a very solid offering from what is qucikly becoming my go to brewery from the east coast.

22oz bottle from kryptic. I know it may not do it for everyone, but I am really beginning to enjoy the Southern Tier flavor/hop/malt profile ("house style") that they are aiming for. Excellent balance of sweet sticky (but not syrupy) malt and rich, oily, citrusy hops on the nose. Traces of lightly charred oak and cashew as well. Pours a thick, full dark amber/copper with a creamy, long lasting white head. Excellent mouthfeel for a barleywine. Not too cloying but not overly hopped making it too dry. Maple syrup, sherrywood, slightly resinous hops, toffee and caramel malt. Quite smooth and balanced very well. Not over the top in any way, in fact, quite restrained for a barleywine. Well balanced and well done.

Bomber. Pours a ruby amberwith a white head that diapears quickly but leaves a thin seat. Lacing is great. Aroma is sweet malts, hops and spices. Flavor is sweet malt, hops, rich spices and molasses. Finishes sweet but with bitter hop finish. High abv but hides well. Good beer from an impressive brewery.

bomber from total wine in norfolk. pours a dark, slightly cloudy amber with hints of ruby and a thin, off-white head with solid lacing. aroma is excellent with with big citrus hops, a great spicy note, pine, and big, toffee malts with a hint of dried fruit. flavor is delicious as well with sweet, caramel malts up front, hints of raisin, date, and roasted nuts, with a great balance of citrus and pine hop bitterness on the finish. palate is full bodied, slightly sticky, with medium carbonation and not the slightest alcohol burn. overall, a damn good brew.

22oz bomber from Ryan at Funky Buddha. Nose is mild but has bits of citrus with alot of yeastiness and caramel malt. The hops in the nose are fairly hidden underneath the intense layers of malt. Complex caramel, fig, prune, and a dash of citrus from the hops but with no hop bitterness. Alcohol very well hidden. This is a very tasty english style barley wine with a bit of an american twist with the hop aromatics. Very well done.
