Chestnut colour, beige small head, good lace. Sweet, very bitter, nutty, raisin, pine, heavily hopped. Full and hop dry finish. Although lots of bitter hop and alcohol still good drinkability. jayme9874 (756), Hamburg, New York, USA

Nice khaki colored head and lace that clings to glass throughout. Aroma of caramel, sour/dried fruits, citrusy hops, bit of pine. Medium-full chewy body, carbonation carries the brew well, flavor is alot like the nose, got some hoppy bitterness but also has a very good hop flavor as well. Balanced, cool hop burps and a nice kick. Kinda like a cross of big foot and foghorn (when it was good in small bottles) Good BW. JPDIPSO (4929), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 11, 2008 First Brew of Two Thousand & Eight, per the bottle. Light brown with orange and ruby colors sparkling through when held to the light. Minimal head, with a ring of tight light tan bubbles and a few small isles of lace. Thick malt and hops aromas. Caramel, figs and hint of dates. Barley Wine, IIPA, Imperial Double Red; I think I would go with the later. While simple, I do like the scent, a nice balance of malt and hops in an evidently strong brew. Toffee, caramel, grapefruit are all there in the front. This dries out significantly as it moves to the linger. Mild nuttiness in the middle; and light pine and oak in the finish. Dry grain linger along with a touch of alcohol and grapefruit zest. I seem to catch Hop Whompus and Double Bastard in this one. Not as flavorful as the Hop Whompus and not quite as strong feeling as the Double Bastard. Perhaps not a barley wine, but I like it. The aroma is sweet matly with strong notes of berries, medium notes of alcohol, and light notes of cinnamon and ginger. The falvor is sweet malty with notes of ginger and caramel as well as light notes of other spices, leading to a dry bitter finish. Braudog (3773), Dayton, Ohio, USA

The aroma is just mildly sugar and doesn’t hint at the nice robust flavors underneath. This drinks with a thick, woodsy character, like a forest in a glass -- brown sugar, pine, caramel. Quite nice. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 1, 2007 Smallish yellow-orangeish head, over absolutely stunning burgundy to accajou beer. Cake bottom, apricot & orange marmalade, and fresh hops (C and other); faraway fusels and multitude of esters. Very fruity, and yet bitterish; all kinds of exotic fruit as lytchees, apricots, with hops and maple syrup-covered; in a very, very balanced way. Ends a bit spicy-peppery. This is absolutely great. After some oxydation to the air, it gets an aroma as from horse chestnut husk. A bit burning MF, ending a bit dry, even wry. Quinine in the aftertaste. Impressive beer. Just the lingering hops make it maybe a tad too bitter. Again thanks to puzzl! mds (2112), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 1, 2007 Bottle. Pours a dark ruby-copper body with a small white bubbly head. The aroma has thick juicy hops, fragrant grapefruit, plums, and pineapple. Oily hop flavour in a thick body. Not overly bitter just plainly resinous with some warming alcohol in the background. Apricot and pineapple fruitiness left with some caramel malt sweetness. Very good.
