Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bottle (650ml). Pours a clear deep ruby with a large mostly-lasting beige head. Looks great! Nice sweet malty aroma with a good amount of c-hops, some fruit and brown sugar. Flavour is fruity and malty with plenty of hops, a bit of alcohol and a long bitter finish. Holy shit that’s easy to drink! What’s the abv on this sucker? 10%? You wouldn’t know it. Medium to full bodied. Really good stuff, I have no problem drinking a bomber of this.

Deep mahogany pour with tan head. Very intensely sweet and alcoholic nose. The flavor is dominated by very darkly roasted malt, roasted barley, dark fruits, and finishing on a pretty strong alcoholic burn on the tonsils. A touch sticky-sweet texture that coats the mouth like syrup. Very nicely brewed winter warmer ( though consumed today on a 92degree July afternoon.)

Very big thanks to HogTownHarry for sharing this with me. Another Southern Tier product I’ve been wanting to try. Appearance: Ruby red, large white head. Aroma: toast & hops & pine & acorns & mangos & caramel & hops again, malt, not like a barley wine at all, more of an IPA. Flavour: Caramel, vodka, lemon, pine, yeast, sweet, alcohol, long bitter finish, awesome.

Deep amber in color with a small off white head. Aroma- alot of citrus hops- some mango and orange, a good deal of caramelized/crystal malts and touch of alcohol. Taste is tropical fruits, citrus, and light mango, with some sweet caramel malt. Nice and clean profile, with a medium body for the style. Finishes moderately bitter, with a touch of alcohol. pretty nice BW.

deep mahogany copper color, some decent head, nose is hoppy, some resin and pine, also alcohol and like molassis caremel, flavor is roasty, resin, kinda chewy molassis again on the finish. Intresting barely wine showed its alcohol at the finish.

The pours is nice and burgundy brown with a one finger creamy tan head. The nose is malty, sweet, raisiny, caramel, mild phenolic character, some alcohol, pungent, some fruit. The flavor is malty, some caramel, alcohol, fruity, mildly spicy, some citrus hop character. The palate was thick and warm with a nice mild carbonation.

Bottle shared by sliffy. Deep crimson pour with a light tan head. Aroma of earhy/spicy/citrus hops coupled with caramel malts. Flavors of earthy hops, light coconut and cinnamon and a tinge of smoke. Solid body, soft carbonation with a bitter/spice finish.
