Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Big sweetness jumped up my nostrils when i buried my face into the glass. Big molasses sweetness with lots of ripe summer fruits, some silky chocolate notes, candy hints and roasted maltiness. Nice drink.

Bottle sampled. Pours a dark copper color with a light tan head. Aroma of caramel malts, fruitiness, and some mild citrus hops. Flavor is very well balanced and fairly sweet with dark fruits, sweet malts, light toffee, and notes of grapefruit with a nice bittersweet finish

Thank you Holdenn for sharing this beer. Red brown with nice brown head. Lots of fruit in the nose, especially strawberry and some pineapple, sweet malt and some dough. Flavor is unlike any barley wine I had tasted before, lots of sweet fruit, slight pine bitterness, some dough. Full body. Very tasty and well done, but defintely not a big hop bomb like most American style barley wines.

Bottle from Goldtwins. Thanks man! Pours a great bright auburn with a lasting beige head. Aromas of sweet caramel, toffee, dates, plums, brown sugar, and floral hops. Complex layers of sweetness consisting of ripe dark fruits, caramel, faint roast, apples, brown sugar, and a nice floral finish. The big sweetness is balanced by a nice hop profile and never becomes cloying. Alcohol is noticeable but light for 10%. A creamy, smooth body that drinks very well.

Mahogany in color with off white head. Nose is full of sweet malts, dried fruit and hops. Flavor had a good malt backing up some nice piney hops. Caramel sweetness, some citrus overtones and a mellow alcohol warmth. Very drinkable barley wine, but the 10% ABV can catch up on you, not that there is anything wrong with that!
