The pour is a deep dark ruby with a light head. Aroma of fruit, sweet toffee, and some hop biterness. Taste is very balanced. Not as much burn as I expected. Alcohol is barely present. Very nice. shigadeyo (2263), Harrison, Ohio, USA

1/22/2008: Southern Tier Back Burner Imperial Barley WIne Style Ale smells sweet. It is loaded with sweet citrus orange and caramel maltiness. It has a nice, golden copper-orange color with a thin, lightly frothy ivory head. The carbonation is fine and quite smooth. The flavor begins sweet and has lots of fruity caramel malt. There is some nice roasty caramelized notes in the middle along with some nice sweet citrus orange/tangerine/grapefruit flavor and mild bitterness in the finish. There is some dried fruit (apricot), toffee, and even traces of cigar (or tobacco) flavors as well. No alcohol in the flavor at all. This beer has a very smooth and easy to drink medium body. It is a bit sticky on the lips. Overall it is a fairly well-balanced American-style Barleywine that will probably be even better in another year.

Honestly I’ve lost my mind because I should know. If you see my rating alert my drunken brain. I was just about to drink a porter and I realized I want a BW. Pours dark dark amber almost no light in but a bit through the head. The head is thing third finger with a tan color. The nose is complex but subtle, with fruit, maltiness, a touch of hops and a bit of candy sugar. The taste is remarkably smooth, sweet and yummy. Wow that is a very very smooth Barley Wine, that I doubt has much age on it. This is a somewhat hopy BW not bad after a DIPA, this is damn nice. Another great one from Southern Tier. mabel (2626), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Clear, dark dark red body with a medium foamy off-white head. Dark roasted malt is not too heavy. Medium-full body is a little astringent. Nice and drinkable, therefore a "dangerous beer."
Overheard: "It’s not often you get a 10% beer that is that drinkable." Grovlam (3825), Copenhagen, Denmark

Bottle. [Papsoe grand American tasting] Small light bubbly beige head. Spare display of lacework. Light cloudy amber color. Aroma of rye bread, fruit, toasted malt, caramel, light vinous, raisins, mild wood. Feels like a Barley Wine. (This is a blind tasting). Full bodied, soft carbonation. Heavy sweet flavor with mild counter bitterness. Lingering toasted malty and light nutty finish. 8 / 3 / 8 / 4 / 16 = 3.9

I can see this one aging really well.
